Hello,

I've just bought an Aygo with the intention of going down the Toad route.
I have just called the insurance Co. (Direct Line) to transfer the insurance to the car and mentioned the planned towing issue.

Their answer was the modification is not allowed since there is a young driver on the policy. "but no one is driving the car when towed", the 25 year old is tucked up in bed while we are off in the motor home".
Oh that does not matter sir.

Anyone else hit this ridiculous issue?
Any recommend as to a different insurer?

Now where are my blood pressure pills?
Geoff

I used to have my toad-to-be's insurance with Co-Op Insurance Services. When I told them that I had fitted an A frame to it, they told me that the policy was cancelled with immediate effect as the vehicle had been modified - there was no debate and no argument. The toad is now insured with Axa which also covers it fully comp when being towed which a number of insurers don't do - and the policy is very cheap as well!

I looked into the whole area of toads when setting up our rig at the start of this year. Several companies would not touch the toad for various (imho spurious) reasons. Both MH and toad on A-frame (Peugeot 107) are now insured with NFU. Fully comp all risks on both including whilst towing/being towed - and that is confirmed in writing from NFU. Toad is any driver 25+, MH named only. It is also one of the few companies which gives unlimited European use, again for both, so we can disappear for 12 months if so inclined and be fully covered - that is also confirmed in writing.
Does that help?

My policy for the toad is with Liverpool Victoria. Fully comp when being driven or towed. They wont let me add my 19 daughter as the car has been modified and as such their policy is not to allow under 21 drivers on their insurance policies. I need to renew in December and have found that some will insure the car and allow under 21 drivers to be insured - Aviva being one.

Thanks to all. Just back after a week's tour of Cornwall. Monday morning I'll be on the phone, hopefully to find a solution.

Thanks,

Geoff
