Google Earth Freezes Whilst Initializing

I have used Google Earth many times and until this year have tracked our travels by downloading a GPX file from the Garmin.

A couple of days ago I tried again and can't get past the initializing page. Everything just freezes and the indication is a Non-Responsive Program. I am using XP and have searched the internet for advice. It seems that it is a very common problem and there are lots of suggestions, such as removing and reinstalling the application, but nothing works. Contacting the Google Earth help facility is a waste of time.

Have other members experienced the same problem and found a solution? Or can someone confirm that it is still functioning normally? I would love to be able to relive some of our journeys during the winter.
