Hi last year we bought a 1993 Autotrail Comanche on Merc 208D base, being newcomers didn't know anything about payload. Plate gross weight is 2800kg, Svtech say it can't be increased, but wondered if chassis can be strengthened to allow greater payload, say 250kg as am unable to hardly put anything in van.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi

Did you ask Svtech why it couldn't be increased?
It could of course be the chassis that needs stiffening (although you have to bear in mind that adding more steelwork will detract from the payload by the gross weight of the steelwork).
On the other hand it could be because of the suspension, braking system, gearbox/clutch capacity or even a combination of several factors.
Until you know why the max gross weight can't be increased in its current confiuration you can't investigate ways of modifying he 'van.

I think wheel and also tyre sizes can come into the equation too.

How much of the gross weight do you have left if you take out anything you've not used for a while, as it's amazing how much we take but not need, and need but not take.

Just wanted to thank everyone who answered my query last month. I have filled in Sv Tech form to give full details of vehicle and gross weight can be upgraded from 2800kg to 3100kg.
Thanks for your help

Do be wary of the actual maximum axle weights as they are often not increased even though the gross weight is upgraded! Wink
