I'm having problems finding an insurer to quote me breakdown cover.

I'm coming up against the 3500kg limit and some even say only up to 7.0 metres.

Can anyone recommend an insurer for my Rapido which is 8 metres long and a max weight of 4250kgs.

Richard

My current van is covered under warrant (still with the RAC) however our last van was covered by Comfort Insurance and that included the RAC breakdown cover for vans over 3500kg and no length limit included in the policy.

You could try them?

Comfort, underwritten by Aviva, offer UK and European breakdown cover through the RAC as part of their advantage policy. As Keith says, there is no limitation on size of vehicle

you could try ADAC if you already have insurance and they cover you for all your vehicles.

I have a Lunar Roadstar 800 at 8 metres length and 4250kg which I have recently insured with MHF which is underwritten by Aviva.

They give full recovery in UK and Europe with no length or weight restriction. They were also a very competitive price. Alternatively I also got a quote from Caravan Guard who also gave unrestricted length for breakdown cover.

As a newbie to MHing and also having to keep it parked on the road I have found it difficult to get insurance cover.

I was hoping that the Fiat warranty would provide the answer.

Comfort, Safeguard and Pickles would not quote for vehicle on road.

I got a quote from the CC at £451 but they didn't do breakdown cover but I didn't realise that I would have so much trouble getting cover due to size of van.

Just done an on-line quote with MHF and it came out at £560 plus a further £58 for full breakdown through the RAC with no size or weight restrictions.

So I went to the RAC site to get a breakdown quote and they'll only quote up to 3500kgs!!!

I'll have to ring both on Monday.

Have you tried Caravanguard?

http://www.caravanguard.co.uk/index.php

They should be able to cover you and they include standard UK breakdown cover without any onorous size/weight restrictions. You'll have to pay a much higher premium with any insurer if you keep the 'van on the road, no way around that AFAIK.

If you want overseas breakdown cover (or UK for that matter) ADAC seem to be providing the best (and cheapest) cover in Europe these days. Do a search on this forum and you'll find plenty of information on how to join etc. They also will cover M/Hs up to 7.5 tonnes for recovery as standard.

EDIT: Just looked at Caravanguard T&Cs and they won't accept new customers with 'vans vakued at more than £20,000 if they're stored on the road, maybe you should take the CC quote and join ADAC for breakdown cover?

Hi Richard,

Our breakdown cover is currently with Britannia Rescue through the CSMA and Liverpool Victoria.
They have recovered us from Europe with excellent service, and we have no hesitation in recommending them.
However, having looked extensively at ADAC's Partner Plus scheme, (which includes medical repatriation too), we'll probably go with them next time round.

Our insurers NFU include breakdown cover in their shedule................but not for MHs.

BTW, the ADAC Plus scheme mentioned above, also covers against accidents, theft, and illness. Rita won't drive our MH, so that cover is ideal for me. Other providers tend to authorise the next qualified driver within your party, if the driver is ill or incapacitated, rather than provide a chauffeur.

HTH,

Jock.

Morning Jock,

Make sure that Rita isn't named as a driver then. If she is and you become incapacitated so as not to be able to drive, your recovery (or courier driver) will be null & void. I took Mrs Dougie off the RV your de suite when I found that out earlier this year. I've no idea why I put her on in the first place, as she's unlicensed, unable and unwilling to drive the thing!!

Dougie.
