Bit of a long shot this one but I've broken my Repeat IT wifi antenna. I think a few days ago I rived the USB lead out of one of the ports and it's a bit bent and damaged. For a while ithe laptop would sometimes see the antenna sometimes not.

I took drastic action today and chopped the USB end of, bought a USB Cable, chopped the end of that and taped the four coloured wires together.

No joy. It now does ping when you plug in bit says the device has malfunctioned.

As far as I am aware red and black are power and green and white are data (positive and negative). I've just wired them colour to colour assuming no crossover.

No luck

I'm a bit embarressed about posting about it as I work in IT but I'm not really a hardware or cabling man. In fact I'm banned usually from access to tools of any description!

I got the Antenna from faculty x a couple oF years ago soni guess i could contact them.

It's been superb and cost over £100. I think the replacement model is a lot less but it would be a shame to dump it because a cable.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

do you think they should just be wired together colour to colour?

Haven't got a soldering iron though or 240v for that matter. On a Cl all week.

Maybe give it to an expert which is what I should have done in the first place.

Have you got a multi meter? If so on the original (broken connector) see which pin is connected to which colour.
Then connect the correct colour of the aerial to the corresponding wire that goes to the correct pin on the new usb cable.

Just because they had the same colours doesn't automatically mean they go to the same usb pins.

Hope that makes sense?

Yeah cheers it does make sense although nothing as hitech as a multi meter in this van!

Will have to wait unti we get home. It's frustrating as I had to work remotely on saturday using the vodafone dongle which here is only 2g. Like watching paint dry. Can use the iPhone for emails and mobile mhf but you can guarenteed I'll need the antenna for something important.

Good job I broke it at the end of our trip rather than a couple of months ago

Have you opened your repeat it itself Barry?

I snagged mine in the door, opened the antenna up and it was a standard mini USB socket on a PCB board inside. Replaced it with a shorter cable and a USB extension which works out easier as I don't have meters of cables flapping about if I can get away with having it sat on the table instead.

Instead of cutting the end of you should have got a short USB extension pushed it together and taped it up - that's what I did with my GPS sender's plug which got crushed.

There are some alternatives to the current shape Faculty X antenna which I'll be reviewing shortly so don't rush out to buy a new one Wink

Thanks guys. Addie. I haven't opened it up as I didn't have the right tool for that either! Looks like some kind of Alan key thing. Now you mention it though it does seem the more logical thing to do and I do have a five metre extension!

I really am a cack handed twit. Will try and get the back off.

Cheers
