Just been quoted several hundred (4-5!) to fit a reversing camera on the van before we get it - rather shocked at the price.

We're not really into DIY when it means fiddling with electrics and drilling holes in the van.

Any advice for rookies?

the problem with Reversing Camera installs is there can be a considerable amount of labour involved (especially with larger vans / RVs) as the cabling has to be run from the rear to the dash and hidden properly so this can mean much work removing panelling etc

If you wanted to go it alone think on that Wink also digital wireless reversing cameras might be an option perhaps

Hmmmm... maybe that's why he also sounded a bit reluctant to be bothered?

Perhaps we need to rethink and make sure someone's always outside directing instead of going down the electronic route?

We bought our motorhome new last year and looked at having a camera fitted. Didn't both and thought we would see how we got on without it. SWMBO is called into action when the going gets tight, but so far not really regretted not having one fitted.

Hi Muggers

I fitted one myself last year to my old van and to be honest I did have a bit of bother guaging the actual distance when I was looking on the screen. Things appeared a wee bit farther away than they actually were.
Mine was hard wired - I have heard there is problems with the wireless version.
I have recently bought a new (for us) MH and now I just ask the other half to nip and look out the back window and shout to me as I reverse. Its 24 feet long and even with a camera I wouldn't feel 100% confident in not clipping a corner on something. If I ever had to constantly reverse it on my own then 'yep' I'd fit another.

By the way I ran the wire under the bodywork using cable ties - not through the van! The hell with drilling holes through bodywork and cupboards everywhere. You will also need to wire it onto the 12v live hand brake light which is found at the base of the hand brake handle under the rubber coupling and is so you cannot look at the screen as you drive along (This is actually the easy bit).

All in all it took me about 2 to 3 hours to fit with a mate and most of that time was spent crawling underneath looking for somewhere to run the wire - which incidentally ran up through the engine compartment and found its way into the accomodation via one of the many entrance holes that all motorhomes have within the engine compartment. Finding this route was the most irritating.

(Like anything it's not nearly as complex as either me or anyone else will make it sound)

Hope this helps

Paul

PS - I think I paid about £350 for mine in the box.

As a fitter myself i would love to fit wireless systems, but the camera still needs power from the reveres light (which means it cant be used when driving). or run a wire to the front of the motorhome, then its pointless being wireless.

By fitting a wired system, it can be used when driving as a rear view mirror and i personally feel the quality of the picture is far better, without interference.

Also i always recommend a screen rather than a clip-on mirror type as they can reflect more on yourself in sunny conditions, making it hard to see.

Phil

Have a look at this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-3-LCD-Car-Monitor-CCTV-Reversing-Rearview-Camera-Car-Rear-View-Camera-UK-/120797058038?pt=LH_DefaultD omain_3&hash=item1c2010d3f6

It's a 4.3inch monitor for dash and a little camera that mounts by your number plate. So you don't need to drill any holes in the body work!!!

It's only £30 delivered. OK so the view wont be as good as it would be if it were mounted up high but better than no view. It's probable not going to be as good as a £400 system but much cheaper and you can have a go yourself.

You might need a longer cable but they are available cheap on ebay.

Basically you need 12v power to the monitor and to the rear camera. Then a cable routed under the motorhome to connect the camera to the monitor. The camera power could (depending on year of van) take power off the number plate lights. That way when you want to view camera switch on your side lights. But then again you still need to route the video cable from camera to monitor so you might as well run a power cable as well.

If unsure I am sure there are some mobile installers here who might supply and install?

These people supplied and fitted my system to a pvc conversion for £350, using a mobile fitter. It included a twin camera.

I bought and fitted one of these Reverse camera kit it's from eBay Germany but don't be put off very good to deal with and quick to post. If you want to buy, the easiest way is to note the item No. (360394391334) and put that in the search on your UK eBay account (if you have a UK eBay account). It is a hard wired system but unless you are a complete no no with DIY take your time and plan / research everything before you do anything and you shouldn't go wrong. Probably the most difficult thing to do is if you want the system to activate when selecting reverse is finding the correct connection point for that wire. the rest of the installation is straightforward and when completed the system can be switched on manually or will work automatically when selecting reverse.
Should you decide to do it yourself I'll happily give you the information on the wiring (or anything else) to enable you.
