Just been reading Practical motorhome( Pg91)

Using long range WIFI ariels eg Faucultyx

"you will need to turn off the internal WiFi on your laptop" Shocked

Didn't know that, will that be why we never seem to pick up a signal that doesn't need a password?

Faculty-x antennas are in their own right a receiver of Wi-Fi (i.e. it is a Wi-Fi adapter).

Which is why you don't use the built-in one your laptop/netbook etc as the laptop wont gain anything from it other than give you two wireless network adapters.

You don't have to turn off your internal wifi, but for a layman it makes the process easier because you are not having to differentiate between two different devices.

On Windows 7 all adaptors show up on the same "list" where as Windows XP you get two different Wifi icons for each adapter.

If you are using a directional antenna you really need to use it in conjunction with NetStumbler or InSSider. A 1 degree movement can mean the difference between receiving a network and not, so these applications work by forcing your computer to check for beacons (networks) faster then it would normally, allowing you to find a network and then fine tune your signal strength (a lower number is better) before actually connecting.

A bit like a sat finder in that respect - listen to the 'beeps' before attempting to watch the picture.

So what (if anything) do you need to do if you have an omnidirectional aerial, like my 'Rocket'.

I have a new netbook running Windows 7. The Rocket was recognised by W7 without a hitch but I have not had the chance to try it out yet.

Hi Aldra

No; whether you need to enter a password or not has nothing to do with the aerial you are using, but is down to how the access point/network you are trying to connect to has been configured.

747 - Yes Windows 7 recognises the device but I had to download a copy of the Realtek drivers and software in order to get it working properly.
regards,
Bill
P.S. I also switch off my laptop's built in wifi when I'm using the Rocket.

Flipping heck 747! Have they got the tinternet in Gateshead! Wow that's progress.

Your best bet is to park the van next to the pontop pike tv transmitter, get a long lead for yer rocket, climb to the top and point it south Towards civilisation where you will pick up loads of free wifi.

Net stumbler does not work with windows 7. it is compatible with XP though.
There is a recent vistumbler that is compatable with Windows 7 or the
inSSider.
both are free downloads.

Alright clever s**te, how do I turn off my internal wifi.

Just to clarify that my comment above is aimed at barryd and not an innocent member of the public. Wink
