I have just ordered a booster from Faculty-x, on reading up on the subject I noticed that with windows 7 it is not necessary to switch off the internal WiFi system. A member mentioned that both systems will be identified on the downloaded soft ware. My question is, will windows 7 identify the stronger signal/ariel,(internal or external), and then choose the best one for the job.which i would think would be the external one on all occassions, ? or is there any performance gain by switching the internal system on and off.
Q: A member mentioned that both systems will be identified on the downloaded soft ware.
In most instances the 'downloaded software' (that comes with the device) will only work with the Wifi booster - see screenshot below, panel on the right.
Q: Will windows 7 identify the stronger signal/ariel,(internal or external), and then choose the best one for the job.
No. If both are connected / turned on Windows will show what both adapters are receiving in terms of networks. It is up to you to chose which adapter / network to connect to. If you have connected to a network with a similar name before using your PC's built in Wifi it may be that it will attempt to connect to that network automatically.
See the attached screenshot below, panel on the left for what Windows 7 will show with both devices connected. Wireless Network Connection 3 is the Wifi Booster, Wireless Network Connection is the internal device.
Q: Is there any performance gain by switching the internal system on and off.
The 'performance gain' is only a marginal increase in battery life by your laptop not having to run two wireless adapters. It also might be easier to only be looking at one adapter at a time. If you don't 'need' the internal adapter you can disable it if you wish. It is not a requirement, it just makes things easier.
I've got both the facultyX and my new Win7 lappie and while playing about with the laptop indoors I plugged in the Faculty unit to check all was working OK - but otherwise why would you want it plugged in at home?

I don't know, why would you? (Is it a trick question? )
Addie, thank you for your prompt reply, I now see what you meant in another thread on this subject when you advised that it is simpler to turn the internal WiFi off, causing less confusion. I will adopt this procedure. Cheers, Bob
