I'm interested to know if anyone has towed a car on a trailer onto the I.O.W ferry with a motorhome. I'm thinking of taking mine next year but I'm concerned that with a long overhang on the van and a low jockey wheel i'll be struggling for clearance. Last time we went we used the bus service but a lot of time was wasted waiting for connections so we are thinking of taking the car. Any views are welcome.
Thanks for the remove the jockey wheel suggestion but once coupled the wheel cannot be removed as it's in the middle of the chassis and it's too long to take out.
There is about 5" of clearance from the bottom of the wheel to the ground when coupled.

Are you sure it cant be removed ? Friends of ours had there's nicked on a M20 service area overnight just before the ferries ,last year !!
Have you tried un-screwing fully and removing the top and pull the wheel
out from under if it's too long to take out.
you could cut it down a few inches each end if you want to. So it will remove (thats what I did with mine about three inches if i remember )
RE "removing jockey wheel", usually they are held to the chassis by a clamp that opens up to let the wheel out sideways.

we are talking about the jockey wheels that are fitted in the middle of the hitch Not the clamp type don't you think we could have worked out how to undo a clamp !
Have you compared the cost- and ease- of taking your car and van separately ? There are some very good inclusive deals. The I.o.W. is not huge; your campsite is not going to be very far from the port so you could drive both there separately. Given that the I.o.W roads are fairly narrow and quite busy at times it might be less stressful anyway to avoid the extra length.
That does leave you with a question of where to leave the trailer on the mainland.....
We live on the Island and regularly cross with our 8.2m Frankia (long overhang).
It varies a lot depending on where you cross. Portsmouth to Fishbourne normally OK at any stage of the tide. Southampton - Cowes ditto.
Lymington to Yarmouth is the tricky one at very high or very low tides. If you tell the ferry staff of your concerns they will watch carefully as you board and if necessary they will rig heavy duty timbers for you to drive on.
