Most people with generators use them for battery charging via the mains charger and running 230/240v appliances.

I only want to charge my leisure battery when not on EHU.

I could :-

1. fit a solar panel - recommended by many people

2. increase battery capacity - probably the most cost effective option

3. use the vehicle engine while stationary - not very friendly to other campers (this is the usual option for boats e.g. on a mooring)

4. fit a battery-to-battery device - quite expensive

5. buy a generator BUT I don't need an expensive heavy mains generator, just a small 12v one lighter and cheaper than a Honda or Kipor.

Do they exist Question

There's the Gasperini self energy which fits under the chassis although not cheap.

I,m not sure what your looking for exists or everyone would have one.

You,ve already mentioned solar and B2B charger.

The problem with charging directly from a 12V outlet on a generator, is that generally, the output is fairly limited. For example, the 12V DC output from a Honda EU10i is 8 amps, whereas a typical onboard charger, fed from the 230V hook-up point, has an output in the range 15-25 amps depending on model.
Also, the onboard charger is normally of an 'intelligent' design with multiple charging stages and will do a better, as well as a faster job.

You could have Wind! (excuse me Embarassed )

I've seen a handful of motorhomes with turbines, but I'm not conversant of the pro's / con's.

I would have thought that this market will change considerably over the next 2 - 5 years as we develop battery technology for cars.

Foweyboy,

I had similar thoughts to yourself on this issue.

I decided to go down the solar and increase battery capacity.

I do not regret my decision !!

Hi.

If you are thinking of going down the generator route and have the effort of getting and using fuel, the noise factor and the times you are not allowed to use one on sites, the security of fastening it to a solid bit of your van to stop it getting stolen, to have to carry it in the van and stowing it somewhere..

You might as well have a bog standard generator which gives you the choice of domestic voltage which until you get one will be amazed at the times you use one other than camping situations..

I managed for quite a few years with my Honda, but went the dark side route, twinned my leisure batteries and put a solar panel on the roof which is brilliant as long as the power on the batteries do not drop much below 12 volts or things will stop working.. The difference between 14 and a bit volts down to 12 volts does not take long especially if you have grand children with you. Wink

A generator gives you as much electricity as you want unless you are running something that takes a lot of amps which will trip it out, will chug on for a good eight hours or so on very little petrol, and charge up your batteries at the same time. And is brought out on quite a few occasions especially when wild camping as that sky can suck the power out of your batteries when the big inverter is turned on Laughing Laughing Laughing .

ray.
