Hi
sorry if this is a really naive question but some of us don't understand technology.
we have just been given our sons HTC wildfire (well for a donation to his bank account) when he got a new phone. It has wifi capability but when away from home do we need a mobile package that includes wifi to be able to use it? I know O2 do a sim package that includes wifi but 3mobile seem to have a really good package as well. The phone will be used for e-mails, a bit of surfing on the move and very occaisional texts or calls so what do we need please?

Chris

edit: the phone appears to be unlocked

You need to remember that wifi is a local connection through a nearby computer, this may be free and does not involve you going through the mobile telephone network so has nothing to do with your mobile service provider.

3g and other connections via mobile telephone networks are not wifi and do use your the network provided by your mobile telephone service provider. This may be a costly option when you are abroad, Alan.

Edit: For connecting via the mobile telephone network in the UK (which is not wifi) there are various good options. I used 3 when at home.

the voice calls and Texts, are fairly standard these days, so just chose a package that meets your needs.

However if you want to be able to surf internet and get emails while away from home, then you will require a data package as well.

Most of the main operators are standardizing on 500mb per month.

its really down to your usage as always.

I am with Vodafone (14 years) no problems, you need to find the service provider and package that suites you.

just like buying a motorhome really isn't it !!

For instance look at the Sim 300 deal on this page: http://www.three.co.uk/Pay_Monthly/SIM_Only/Choose_your_SIM

1Gb of data, 300 minutes and 3000 texts for £10 a month.

Offers vary from provider to provider, there are no set data limits. 1Gb was always enough for me even doing quite a bit of surfing the net.

This is calls, texts and data all in one package. This is common these days.

Or if you don't want to lock yourself down for a year, Giffgaff do a PAYG package at £10 for 250 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited Giffgaff-Giffgaff calls and unlimited internet for a month.

As others have said, the benefit of wifi being included in a package is as much for the mobile provider as the customer. If your mobile roams onto wifi then it stops usage of your mobile allowance, but if you've got 500M or 1G as part of your mobile subscription, you really don't need to worry about exceeding your allowance anyway for the type of application you describe. The only benefit you get, then, is that depending upon what it's connected to, connection via the wifi signal may be faster than the mobile 3G one. The real beneficiaries of these inclusive wifi arrangements are the mobile operators, because their 3G networks are getting congested so if they can offload the traffic to a wifi one, it eases their network planning issues.

Steve, that Vodafone deal does not include any calls and gives half as much data and only 10% as many texts as the 3 one. The main disadvantage is that you will pay for all your calls on the Vodafone deal against 300 minutes included in the 3 deal. I am sure there are better deals that the 3 one but that is not one of them.

I posted this only to ensure that the OP is pointed in the right direction and does not end up with a bad deal, Alan.

Edie: Just seen Paul's post. I think you are not locked in with a 3 sim only deal, you can cancel anytime giving 30 days notice. Although that deal is £15 a month. The 3 sim 100 deal is monthly and can be cancelled with 30 days notice although you get a less for your £10.
