My 1994 Ducato has some rust showing at the edge of the windscreen where the rubber seal meets the metal. The rust is 2 patches - 1 at the bottom and and 1 in the bottom corner.

I want to fix it but I cant really afford to pay a garage to do all the work. I would hope to do as much of it as is practical myself.

What is the best way to deal with this? I imagine the windscreen must come out first? Is taking it out possible for 2 people? Or is it something that must be done by a pro?

Thanks - Adam

A local mobile independent windscreen fitter would probably remove/re-install a windscreen for you. You could then attend the necessary repairs.
I'm sure your local bodyshop would give you a lead or two for the contacts

some years ago i had the same problem so i knocked the rust out filed and sanded it back to good metal treated it with rust away and filled and sanded smooth then primed and painted it and had no problem after that.
the reason i didnt take the screen out was it is heat sealed in and special tools or expensive windscreen company is required

If the screen is held in by a rubber seal then it is no big deal to remove and refit it.

You really need to do that if it is rusted quite badly or you will never get a proper seal.

You push out the screen with 2 feet and hope your helper is not a butterfingers. Laughing

If the rust is not too bad and the screen is held in with a rubber, you can sand the paint and rust off the body work on the outside edge of the rubber and touch them in with paint. lift the rubber away from the body and brush some wax oil onto the rust under the rubber, the wax oil will prevent the rust under the rubber from getting worse and is better than paint for this. The rust will have started under the rubber and made its way out, this is because the rubber rubs all the paint off the body when you are driving. this is a common fault with non-direct glazing.

This would be a temporary repair and although the rust under the rubber would stop you may find the paint you have touched in on the outside edge will need touching up again later.
