Does anybody have any experience of using the Aire in Zinnailaan/Kazemelaan http://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=51.2239,2.921033&spn=0.00172,0.005284&t=h&z=18&vpsrc=6
and being evicted by the Police for sticking out a few cm's over the lines or for not parking "correctly"? From what I've read the bays are quite tight and the police are said to exercise zero tolerance.

The Aire does not appear to have a good recommendation on Camping car infos for that reason.
http://www.campingcar-infos.com/Francais/aire.php?numid=1276&Localit%E9=OOSTENDE

I've also read that Oostende has extensive "No parking of motorhomes" zones - can anyone confirm.

The reason I ask is that in a different connection I have a meeting (in UK) with a representative of the Oostende tourist office next week but I'm also going to ask about the Aire and a few personal experiences might be useful to relate.

On a personal note I am intending to use it as a first stop on a trip to BeNeLux/Germany next month and wonder if getting there at 3/4am is likely to be a good idea.

Met with my Ostend contact today and she confirmed that although the Aire in Zinnialaan is "approved" the Tourist board don't really think it is all that suitable, as it is very cramped and bigger vans that don't fit the spaces get moved on by the Police.

She stated that the area they are happier to promote is in Fortstraat, near Fort Napolean. They accept it is further from the town centre but it is quieter and they think safer.
To help get it used more, the ferry across the harbour mouth has now been improved with a bigger boat and a more reliable service than the previous "if the ferryman is there there's a service - if he isn't, there isn't" one. The new boat can accommodate bikes as well.

I'm stopping over in Oostende next month so I'll check the situation out.

Hi

Please keep us posted on this. I quite like Ostend but MH parking is tricky. I also think you can park in the coach park overnight near th Hotel Bero or something?

I have also heard it's possible in the car park near the station so you may well be able to, but just don't expect to be left alone.

Here is a quote from their website.
http://www.visitoostende.be/en/in-ostend/parkings-for-mobilhomes/168

Quote:
Where can mobilhomes camp?

There is currently no designated camping area for motorhomes in Oostende. As long as no such area is available in Oostende, we kindly refer motorhome users who want to spend the night at the coast to our neighbouring municipalities.

Quite clearly from that motorhomers aren't welcome overnight in Oostende - however - my contact seemed to infer that overnighting would be OK in the area off Fortstraat.

I didn't bother trying the town centre "Aire" in Zinnialaan as Ostende town centre isn't really MH friendly. But went over the river/canal past the TransEuropa Ferries terminal to look at the area near the sailing club site.

The place I was told to use is at Fortstraat and appears to be here.

The sailing club is off to one side towards the sea on Vuurtorenweg, close up behind the coastal dunes with plenty of space to park and is advertised as a free WiFi hotspot.

It was easy to get a signal which said it was unsecured, but I just couldn't get a connection through to the internet.
