I did start this thread before but it seems to have gone AWOL
An update is that I can get a MK2 controller for £708 plus fitting, get my original controller upgraded or get a new dish/dome. I think paying upwards of £700 for a controller is so close to a KVH dome (£1299 + fitting) is really not worth the hassle that it may go wrong. Even upgrading my existing controller at £70 could be fraught with problems like needing a faster LNB etc
Do any members have any thoughts?
I have been talking to oyster and Jacksons who have been very informative and helpful so it's worth having a chat with them

If you want to know if your Mk1 control box is capable of being upgraded you need to open the control box - 4 screws and open like a book - and look for a chip ATM EGA 128 then it's OK if it's ATM EGA 103 then not OK

Reason for change by richardjames: additional info from Oyster

You can't go wrong with a KVH dome, had ours for 2 years now and it has given excellent reliable service. We always seem to go to the windiest places-clifftops or next to lakes so it is invariably windy and the dome really comes into it's own. Wink

The advantage of the KVH is that it is only 300mm high but I have to agree with both are very good reviews for both Very Happy

The Alden Planar is only 14cm high when parked, and is susceptible only to gale force winds.

That, or a similar planar array is another option to consider Richard, and about the same price range. Can't even see it when it's down.

Having had both, it would be dome, dome, dome. Laughing

Only susceptible to 3" of snow. Cool

But do you get a better class of programme on a dome? Confused

Thank you for posting this info Richard. I finally got round to plucking up the courage yesterday and managed to get my Vision 1 control box off the inner wardrobe wall where it's mounted. I did think that at one stage I was going to have to get a crowbar behind the box to lever it off (mighty good kit that double-sided sticky stuff!!) but it finally gave up and relinquished its firm grip! Laughing

I am delighted to say that the control box has the 128 chip in it (Phew!!). I have phoned Oyster Sat-Tech at Welford (Northants) and I am now booked in for next Friday to have the update done. (Welford is only about 30 mins drive from me at the most!). Cost - £46.50 inc VAT and about 30 minutes of my time there. Job's a good 'un so they say!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Regards

Chris

Just an update to my previous post! Been, seen, done, sorted!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

30 minute drive to Welford, most probably no more than about 15 minutes there, £46.50, control box tested on site, worked perfectly.

Back at home, put control box back where it belongs, connected it all up, switched on and Bob's your uncle or Fa**y's your aunt Laughing Wink everything is Yankee doodle day!! Very impressed with Ten Haaft UK - well done for their customer service and support.

Regards

Chris
