The problem is if it is for 'hire and reward' stuff gets a little tricky. I lent our van to some family friends and Safeguard were fine about adding a temporary driver for a week. We received no money in return as we let them borrow it as a present, but I'm unsure where they stand on Australian driving licences.
There are many specialist insurances for Austrlians wishing to drive UK registered vehicles since many 100's of young (and old!) Ozzy's come to the UK and head off around Europe on 'Van Tour' - Walkabout, Hertz being some. A young couple we know from www.technomadics.net might be able to help you out as they have done the insurance thing twice now.
The problem comes is you shouldn't have two insurance policys valid on one vehicle at a time so you'd have to cancel one while running the other.
I've probably raised more questions the answers but I hope some of this is of use.
It very much depends on your insurer and then on, what licence your visitors hold, nationality, residency, age, etc. etc.
We were looking at doing a swap with somebody in their 70's from NZ, they were UK born but had lived in NZ most of their life and had an NZ licence. Saga (our then insurer) had no problem with the age but would not cover a non-UK resident with a non-UK license. Other insurers were OK with the Non-UK bits but wouldn't cover on the age side.
If your insurance is up for renewal before your visitors are due to arrive it could be worth ringing around and asking for different insurers attitude to your question, if of course your existing insurer can't/won't help.
Short term or H&R insurance will be very expensive indeed for anything over 2 weeks or so.

I've spoken to my insurers (Comfort) and they will add our visitors from OZ on to our insurance at the cost of £120 per week. That will make a three month exchange very expensive.
That was a good idea while it lasted, back to the drawing board.

Don
I suggest some ringing around at renewal time.
