Hi all, I have just decided to look for a new laptop to replace a well used old one.
My question is can I buy a new laptop and replace the windows 7 with XP.
This may come across as a strange request but I already have a desktop with windows 7 and I am not impressed,
and I have loads of software that will only work with XP.

I do not know what size harddrive it has but it is possible to have both systems on the laptop provided you can get the drivers for the new hardware.
I have to agree with your frustration regarding the software - I'm having problems with an iMac which has just updated and will not run some programmes that worked on the previous OS
Hope that helps

What programs do you have that will not run on Windows 7?

It is possible to turn off most of the "features" of 7 to make it look and behave like XP on which it was based. When we finally made the switch we turned off most of the desktop features and aside from a windows icon where the 'Start' button was its pretty much indistinguishable from XP and runs quicker as a result.

XP is over 11 years old now and hardware has moved on a great deal so it may be that you could lose any benefits of the "upgrade" and expense of the new machine by using older software and drivers not designed for its capabilities.

My advice would be to stick with it as you'll be better off in the long run.

As others have said, you can run Windows 7 in XP mode and most XP programs should run OK. Microsoft ceased mainstream support for XP in 2009 and is completely ceasing support in April 2014.

Unless your PC can't run Windows 7 - which doesn't sound as if it will be the case here - then I would think it a retrograde move to install XP.

As an aside, I am currently trialling Windows 8 which is due to be released next year. From what I've looked at so far it seems quite impressive.
