We are planning to travel to Spain in January - commitments mean this is the earliest we can leave.
We have 2 dogs and this is our first time travelling to Spain for the winter. We are not sure whether to take the ferry to Bilbao / Santander or to Saint Malo and the drive down.
Any advice would be appreciated we are worried about taking the dogs on the long ferry trip
Hope someone with experience can offer some advice.
hi
we have sailed on the ferries to spain with our dog a few times, and no problems. as margaret n tony just posted the ferry with pet freindly cabins is the cap finisterre (brittany ferries) which sails to bilbao and santander, there is only 14 of these cabins on each sailing, so they go pretty quick, also there is a dog walk area on the deck outside, if you love your dogs its the way to go.
Brittany Ferries website has been recently updated, and you can now check the availability of the dog-friendly cabins on line as you go through the booking process.

Hi
We use the tunnel with our dog twice a year to travel to Almeria ,Spain end of Jan /early Feb time, return June and back again in August to November ( will start the trip home next Tuesday) we see a vet in Bordeaux this works ok for us plenty of sites open on route all year .
We looks at using the Bilbao ferry with the dog as we have used this route twice before without the dog . Our dog is a rescue one and does not like being caged up ! So this is a none starter for us.
We were told by a friend the other day that used the this ferry with two dogs in June this year ,its quite expensive also kennels not very good and he will not use this route again !
So you pays your money and takes your chance I suppose !!
Another point is the ferry could being cancelled if the weathers bad. Also the cost.
Hope this helps .
A read of >this post< will provide further background information.

hi spaniels. we travel down to Spain every year in January and back in April it all depends on the weather . we live on the east of the u.k so its Dover for us . if its nice we take our time going down because there is a lot of France aires on the n10 route down many with free electric . if the weather is bad we jump on the motorway and fly down. in all the times we have been going down the back end of march 2010 coming back we woke up to this on a aire by the side of the med ( see photo ) and the drive up to Calais was hard going the other photo was going through the somport tunnel Spanish side normally good going .jud
I think if you have not already booked a dog friendly cabin you will be to late for January, they seem to go very quickly
We now only use the tunnel or the short ferry crossings. We did once use Santander to Portsmouth but Shadow was distressed with the kennel and we spent hours standing on the "dog deck" with him freezing cold
Now we just drive slowly to where ever we are going as we have no real time constraints and he stays relaxed
Its one day to the tunnel and two days of French Aires for us. The dog starts getting a bit restless by the end of the thrid day but by then we are in Cap Breton, it's mild and he can race around on the sand befire taking on Spain.
Then it's another two days to Almeria. The dog would be distress in a kennel in the bowels of the ship.
