Just a quick hello from a new member. I'm on a year's career break and after long (and painful for my nearests and dearests) deliberations, I have bought a Peugeot Boxer L4H3, which I'll have converted in Dec/Jan as a home-from-home for the next 9 months or so.
The plan is for a range of long-ish trips with my standard poodle Charley, starting with a bit of sunshine in February (Spain/Italy?), then some serious snow over Easter (Norway) and then a bit more sun and culture (rest of Europe).
I'm currently deciding whether I'll have a solar panel on the roof and found this website very informative. I'm pretty much certain that solar is a good idea and am trying to source a feasible setup for a reasonable price.
I must say I envy your thoughts and ambition, but why drive all the way from Spain to Norway? Surely you could get some snow in Feb (Alps/ Pyrenees / Sierra Nevada?) and a bit more sun in March, for a lot less miles and therefore a lot more spending stuff?
We spent the winter in Costa del Sol couple of years ago and it was wonderful to walk on the beach in brilliant sunshine and look up at the mountains covered in snow.
Hi Gordon, thanks for the welcome. I'll probably start with a bit of snow in the Pyrenees, but I have a very good friend in Norway whom I want to visit, so it's an important part of my plan. I may hang around there until the spring, so I can visit a few more bits of scandinavia when it's green.
The great thing is, I have no firm plans and my itinerary is likely to change as much and often as Dartmoor weather.
Solar is the way to go along with twin batteries if you can.
We have a 90w panel and 2 110v batteries. We went to France for 18 days and never used a hook up once.
Enjoy your travels

I'm getting twin 110Ah batteries, as I'll have a compressor fridge and a music habit. I'm collating the data at the moment for the spreadsheet to see if I get away with 80-100W or if I ought to make use of the generous roof space on the van to get perhaps 2x 80W panels (I spoke to someone - probably Ben? yesterday who said 2x 80W might be cheaper than 1x 120W).
Thanks for the sbmcc heads-up, I'm off to register there now.
