My wife and I resisted useing satnav until last year when we purchased Tomtom XL IQ Europe and was told that we have 42 countries at our disposal. Earlier this year we forked out another Ł70 to be able to update. our first trip out this year took us to Portugal in our new motorhome and we had no problem. Our second trip took us down Eastern France where we visited the city of Metz. From there we planned to follow the river Mosel into Germany heading for Koblenz. I went to programme Tomtom to be told that I have no mapping for Germany!! On our return to the UK I visited the Tomtom website and it would appear that they have created 5 Zones of which only 1 zone at a time can be used now!! So if you are visiting a zone next to the zone you have loaded, you would have to stop on the border find a source of internet, remove the old zone mapping and then download the new zone mapping. We revisited Halfords store where we purchased our unit to be told that we can still have 42 countries and that they knew nothing of the zone proccess that we were referring to. Meanwhile Tomtom are telling me that they now operate the 5 zone system. This is not a good way of getting around in my opinion.
The thing you unfortunately have to watch with TomTom is the internal memory size since they stopped using SD cards.
The 'entry level' models such as the XL IQ has only 2Gb memory while the 'full' europe map is in excess of 2Gb meaning some must be stored on the PC. However with the old TomTom home you could swap the maps about provided you had the cable and software.
In my mind there is no point paying Ł70 to update the maps - you can sell an XL for Ł100 on eBay and get the latest model like we have with current maps and a years subscription for about Ł160.
We have a Via Live 120 with the 4Gb memory, live traffic, weather and Google search and 'full europe' maps and its worked as far east as Romania.
The reason they are split into regions is that older tom toms have not got the space for the maps which are getting bigger. The OP can download any of the regions to suit, he may be able to download more than one if there is space.Or he could buy a tom tom that has a SD/MM card slot. Put in a 4 gig card and download all the maps in one go.

What he said, firstly.
If your unit has an SD card, you can buy a bigger capacity card and then transfer the full mapping to the new card. TomTom website has the details.
The map zones can be stored on your laptop using TomTom Home. So no need for internet connection at the border of a country in the next zone. TomTom website again has the details.
The whole reason for zoning as pointed out by Addie is the recent increased size (extra detail) of the European mapping.
The TomTom Go Live Europe has no SD slot but it does have an internal 4Gb internal memory.

This does surprise me. We've got a very old TT700 which has all western Europe, Greece and Eastern Europe and a new UK map. We've still got masses of space to download new maps and are about to add north Africa. In addition to all these I have a vast number of POIs: Pan- European campsites and aires, supermarkets covering most of Europe, Club sites, CLs and CSs, National Trust, LPG outlets; you name it and I download it.
We've no card; it's all on the TT and, when we get to a border, it switches seamlessly to the next country. I can plot routes and itineraries from home to Istanbul and then choose campsites and interesting things to see en route.
We renewed the Western Europe maps a couple of years ago.
Thanks for all of your comments. I was not aware of the fact that if I need to update my unit whilst travelling using Tomtom home, I can do so without being on line. I was most suprised that an enormous company like Halfords have not trained their staff with such a vital piece of product knowledge regarding the recent zoning because when you first make your purchase now, does it mean that you start off with this 5 zone system or does it show when you update for the first time?
I recently bought a newer TT and when I wanted to add their free latest update, I was told there was not enough space in the TT's memory. I bought a 4gb sd and popped it into the slot of my GO and had no problems downloading the data for all of W.Europe.
The latest programs have much more data now, including which lane to travel in at road junctions and a computerised voice that gives far more detailed information than basic voices did.
Sorry about those of you who do not love your TT but mine suits me down to the ground.
I also downloaded European Aires which proved to be invaluable.
