A friend asked me to look at his computer last night (makes a change from the etchings!) The battery wasn’t lasting and a new battery was completely dud.

Turns out it’s the charger/laptop connection that’s suspect. When the lead is inserted and carefully tweaked, the little ‘charge connection’ light comes on and the computer can be turned on.

I left the charger on overnight and the laptop off. Opened the laptop in the morning – working! Then I removed the charging lead – black screen. So although the charger can run the computer (if carefully tweaked) it’s not getting power into the battery. Are there separate connections from the charger socket to the computer and to the battery?

The old battery functions without the charger being applied but I don’t know if this is residual power from before the connection became faulty, or if it’s getting from the charger.

Any ideas?

First thing is to repair the socket. as constant twiddling will cause more damage. Then see what the batteries are doing.

Is that an expensive/awkward job? I've replaced a screen on a netbook before but not been into the gizzards.

Shouldnt be too hard, just depends on the particular machine. The socket is probably OK and just dry jointed, sockets are usually cheap to buy.

You will need to research it on the internet as it very much depends upon the machine. One of my teenage children damaged the socket on his Dell laptop by continually allowing the power lead to pull on the socket. As it was under warranty I contacted Dell and they had to replace the motherboard as the socket is an integral part of it. I have now bought a separate socket for a couple of pounds on ebay which I will have to solder on if he does it again as the laptop is out of warranty. On some other laptops, the replacement of the power socket is much simpler I think.

Thanks folks - I shall pass on the info.

I'll not attempt it myself in case I do more damage!
