Our X250 has developed a knocking under heavy cornering, originally right but now also left.

In my mind this is almost certainly ball joints, probably due to countless hairpins throughout Norway and Eastern Europe.

I thought it might be springs or top mounts but the van is fine on the straight / bumpy and only when on mountain roads or a quick roundabout does it start to knock and bang.

Does anyone have an alternative diagnosis before I order the parts to come down to Spain and meet us for christmas? This is the only time we intend to be stopped and I'm hoping if we have parts in hand it will be easier to get them fitted before we head to Morocco in January.

From your post I assume you have a fair mechanical knowledge Addie.

Can you describe the noise a bit better. I assume you would recognise noisy cv joints but form your description that does not sound likely.

You could do worse than ask Mark Woods at C&M Auto Services in Lancaster. Mark is a very knowledgeable Fiat mechanic who specialises in motorhomes. He is a member on here, if you mention that you are an MHF member and are away at the minute I am sure he would help over the phone.

You can contact him on 01524 843721 or email him here: http://candmauto.co.uk/contact.php

Good luck with it, Alan.

It sounds like CV (Constant Velocity) joints to me, in front wheel drives these are in drive shafts.

Hi,

I've just changed the anti roll bar drop links on my Berlingo and have cured the knocking that you have described. Lot cheaper and easier than CV joints.

Surely you would be better just calling into a Fiat or commercial type dealer. It could be a few things causing the knocking and I wouldn't have thought cv joints, ball joints etc would be too hard to come by in Spain. Of course it you intend fitting them yourself, then that's different.

Worn CV joints first give an indication of wear by sounding a bit like a machine gun when under power on full lock !!

If its a rattle over uneven surfaces then it could be a lot of things.

If you are unable to locate the cause yourself then it would be a sensible move to get a professional to check it out, just in case its a serious safety, rather than "just" an annoying, issue

If it is CV joints make sure that the boot isnt split as if it is then the great flies out under centrifugal force and the joint dries out and this causes the knocking.

if the boot isnt split try injecting some CV joint grease into the boot and joint from a grease gun (loosening the clip first) and refitting afterwards (or use a cable tie). I have stopped knocking CV joints doing this on numerous occaions and it costs very little to to so worth trying

it does sound like CV joints to me

I don't know the X250 suspension set up, but on lots of vehicles the ARB droplink is the first to fail, then the wishbone bushes then the ARB bushes.

But cornering knock is usually the ARB Droplinks

I'd rather not be at the mercy of a Spanish (or any) garage, I'll be turning up with the parts and a price in mind fit or I'll leave it until I get home. I'll be in Spain (stopped) from Christmas day until first week in Jan. There is only one Garage I'd trust with my vehicles and my wallet!

I'm willing to put money on its not a CV joints as the noise increases with vertical movement and not speed. Its unlikely given the age as the boots have not perished. It could be the ARB, only £30 a pair but not as catastrophic as a ball joint if it was to fail. There's only so much checking for play you can do with just a trolley jack and no axel stands!

The noise is only present under heavy cornering when weight is transferred to the inside wheel, started off sounding like a mud flap dragging or a top mount allowing the spring to rotate but it isn't either.
