Hi
I have just Sorned my vehicle, possibly until April 2012 and as it will be in storage I was hoping to insure it for Third party fire and theft but the Caravan club say no such policy is available only fully comp.

as the vehicle will not be on the road therefore unlikely to be involved in accident with other vehicles why can I not insure for say damage or fire whilst off road?

Regards
Terry

Your Insurance Company doesn't seem to offer that option, others may do. Our Insurance Company will allow us to reduce our normally fully comp. policy to fire and theft only while laid up.

Are you asking to take a new policy for fire and theft only or are you asking to reduce existing levels of cover? The latter should be easier to do.

If you might want to do the same again maybe you could shop around at renewal time, Alan.

hi prog54. the amount m/h cost i would leave it fully com if i was you leaving it in storage any thing could happen and if some one damaged it badly and if i am correct the responsibly on you its a long time since we had to put our m/h's in storage . our m/h is parked on the drive when not in use we fill a sorn BUT we all ways keep it fully insured . for what bit of money you save its not worth the risk and if any thing happened you would be kicking your self up the a*s.jud

A few years ago I saved £20 by changing from Fully Comp to TPFT. After 2 weeks a stone cracked the windscreen and it me cost £150. Think of the things that could go wrong in storage and sleep easy.

Go back to basics.

It is a free choice whether to insure a possession.

Except, when one wishes to keep a vehicle on the road, in which case Third Party insurance is obligatory.

Apart from that take your choice - risk or insure?

Insure insure insure. I know someone who bought a motorhome on finance and put it in storage without insurance shortly afterwards it was stolen-he is still paying for it. What you need to ask is how much is being saved? What did the van cost ? a lot more than you could save.
No storage is 100% secure and it isn't worth the risk. When my van was in storage some clown hit it a claim was persued and my insurers demande to see the CCTV pictures sorted.

I agree, insure it, we put our M/H in storage for 3 weeks while we had our drive done, when we went to collect it someone had broken the back indicator light, had to replace full panel of lights. it could have been worse.

The price differential between Third party and 'comprehensive' or 'fully comprehensive' whatever they currently mean, seems to have disappeared. 20 years ago we used to notify our insurers that the camper was 'Off the road' and they would suspend the road element of the policy. Not tried this recently as we use ours all the year round. It helps to wear the tyres out and you do not feel so bad replacing them when the reach the wear limit rather than the age limit.

Totally agree with keeping fully comprehensive cover on it while it is in storage. If you try to reduce the cover, then in the event of an incident which might justify a claim then your insurers might try to reduce the amount they pay out by denying liability for a claim......

If you are determined only to have TPFT insurance you will have to change brokers as the CC obviously do not want to offer that as a suitable policy (that probably means they do not get much commission from such a policy Rolling Eyes ).

Thanks guys for the replies.
It seems that it is unanimous and sensible to keep the f/comp insurance from your replies.
And as you all seem to say the potential saving is not worth the
risk should even something minor happen.
cheers
Terry
