The campsite database is continuing to grow as more sites are added and as more people add 'reviews'. One thought that occurs to me is that the initial entry does not tend to get changed over time. I'm particulartly thinking about the cost information. One has to read thought the reviews to find the up to date information.
How about if the mods use the info from the reviews to keep the 'fact's in the main site entry up to date?
If this is already the way it's done then my aplogies but see
http://www.motorhomefacts.com/modules.php?name=Campsites&op=display_results&csid=121
for a simple counter example - the high season rate is now 10 Euros/night, not 4.50 Euros.

P.S. I appreciate that the campsite mods have quite a job on their hands already!
P.P.S. Perhaps the way to do it is to submit changes to factual information using the 'report an issue' link? I've been doing it by submitting a 'review' and maybe I'm causing the problem!
From my recent communications with the database guys, it seems clear, to me at least, that they need more hands, not only to keep reviews and updates moving but to attack outstanding issues like "Who maintains Autosite entries?" and "Who processes CL/CS changes each month form the club's published listings?"
I've noticed a number of members volunteering help but I don't see any positive response.
Now that the database is being commercially sold, I think it's time to update the review/correction process or the database will get so outdated as to become of no use.
I understand that too many cooks.......... but I believe there would be lots of members prepared to take on a single aspect of maintenance - we just need asking.

Tony - I agree - I'm up for that too. Please will someone tell me if I can help? I'm IT literate, maintain several websites and also a MySQL database.

When it comes to costs and the site has a web site I have always put
"See web site" but I guess if you are off line you cannot do this.
The clubs get round this problem by pointing out you should always check with the site.

Sorry if this is adding to the problems but it would be good if we could add additional pictures when things change... like Wissant, which is now a well designed Aire not a casual field or has this already been updated.
Alan
Adding additional pictures to an entry is already something on the ToDo list Alan and a better means of displaying them / cycling through them
Always open to additional help on the campsite side of life as it helps to keep the data cleansed, not sure on the feasibility of keeping the prices correct but always worth discussion
With respect Nuke, if there isn't an intention of keeping the prices up to date then perhaps the information shouldn't be specifically collected in the first place! Nothing brings a database into disrepute faster than it containing out of date information.
Today we can just about get away with it as most of the entries are only a year or two old. However, what about in a further 2 or 3 years time when it's 2014 and we're still displaying information that is 4 or 5 years out of date?
regards,
Bill
P.S. Just tried the outandaboutlive database and it's pretty poor compared with the MHF one - however it's the poor search facility and the lack of database entries that makes it poor and that's where MHF is building a great advantage.
The moderators don't have anything to do with the campsite database, they have enough to do keeping the forum tidy. There are in fact two of us (me and Spykal) who process new entries/reviews and three other members (Boff, olley and peejay) who act as database admins to keep the database tidy.
As for updating existing entries, Mike and I do update them regularly when new reviews are submitted if the information in the review is important (ie: site changes/closures etc.). Prices are less important I think and as such are not always updated - and yes we do expect users to read the reviews for price updates, wouldn't you read any recent reviews if you were considering using a site? We have considered removing the price fields in the past for this very reason but I think most users realise that prices will always move in an upward spiral over the years and although the current price shown might not be current, it will at least act as a price guide. A site that cost £30 a night in 2005 is still likely to be expensive and an aire that cost €3 in 2005 is still likely to be a cheap stopover. Maybe we should have a note telling users to check before booking - but are users really that gullible? I for one would certainly prefer an approximate price guide rather than no price at all. Now the database is being marketed to the public maybe a radical new approach is called for? That's one for Nuke I think.
