Does anyone use the Skycard (£25 I think) in France, Spain, Portugal etc. and if so, what kind of reception and/or programmes can you receive.

I have a Sky box but have not subscribed for the past 18 months and I was just wondering whether I should use it in the MH with one of these cards.

I am led to believe these cards should only be used in the UK, but I won't tell if you don't....... Laughing Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Hi

You can usually use a sky box without a card but with the card you receive a few extra channels plus it's claimed by some that it improves reception in difficult to receive areas. You need to pair up the card with the box. I've used one all over Europe.

Good luck

The main advantage currently is you can get ITV1 in southern Spain on frequency 11973V 27500 with a small dish Read the posts on here to see how to tune it in and view it under "other channels" also you get all the channel 5's so its worth having it Smile

I have the White Sky card (25pound) it gets you Channel 5 and All 5ers. Pick TV,Pick TV+.
Viva....Sony TV....Sony TV+ ,over and above all the free channels..........Thats it
You can put this card in ANY Sky box once its been activated (it is not paired to a box)
What you get also depends on the dish size...85cm should get the above down to Alicante area. As C7ken says there other post here that give you the new default setting you may need and how to input Other Channels.

hi kaacee. the free view sky card lasts for 5 years yes £25 but you don't get a lot you will get (ch 5 )to be truthful you have to take a subscription out if you want to get most of the channels . we keep our old box with the free view card as a spare. we now use a sky h.d plus box with subscription and yes it doe's seem to get a stronger signal . we have take sky box's abroad for years and the box work's fine but when you get down further down Spain as c7ken says's you have to change your frequency ( lnb e.t.c ) if you search THE SAT AND P C GUY you can print off all you need . i take it you will be running it through a inverter thats o.k jud

Thank you for all your replies...I have a KVH R4SL dome so adjustment of LNB is not possible, I usually just switch it on and it finds the satellites that are available automatically, at the moment this is limited to northern Spain with Astra 2 and on Hotbird further down the Spanish coast, I can only receive about a dozen or so channels mainly German......

I was wondering if a Sky box would improve on this or is it purely down to the footprint of the satellite's irrespective of which receiver you use.

Well a sky box will allow you to use the freesat from Sky card which will allow you to tune in the ITV1 on freq11973 However the Domes (All of them) are small dishes so they dont have the same gain as a larger dish. but within the limits of the smaller dish I still would currently try a sky box as it may give you ITV1. There is no other way other than broadband TV , Slingbox etc. I dont find the Domes to be as powerfull as The Maxview Crankup or Camos Flatsat but ofcourse they are more than fine in the UK and a great deal of France. Even if you dont get ITV1 everywhere a sky box +card should certainly increase how far south you can expect to get a signal just read the posts on how to set it up. The reason I am hesitant to say exactly what will happen is I have not tried a dome down in the Mazarron area and that's a very difficult area in my opinion Smile

Yes. A Sky box with a FTV card can accesds the "free to view" versions of Five and ITV1 and C4 (Ireland), which reside on a different satellite ot the free to air versions of the channels. The free to air versions in areas of spain can only be receive on 2.4m dish, yet the FTV versions can be receivde on smaller 60cm dishes.

HOWEVER.....

from 1st week in december you will not need a sky card for the "fives" apart from Five HD , as they go free to air that week...ie no sky card required. They will be available for free, free to air, on Freesat boxes , sky boxes, and other boxes. Channel 5+1 also starts that week.

And the same is expected for the ITV1s on 11973 an 12402 whom are expected to go free to air soon. In fact you can see them FTA on freq 11053 h 22 5/6

Reception of these free to air Fives and ITVs1 will be different - as they are on the new astra 1n satellite, whose reception is different to the south beams you may have been used to - for example, in the canaries they used to be able to get 5 on a 1m dish, now due to 1n they need a 2.4m dish for the fives! So the farther south, south east and south west you go reception will be worse than before, as 1n reception drops steeper than the previous south beams these channels were on. I know that some 85cm dishes south of me that are struggling with them on this new frequency - I am awaiting some confoirmation about how an 85cm dish is working down in the Torrevieja area with these new frequencies for C5.

I fyou have a "non sky box" and are using it for the fives, then you will need to rescan freq 10965 h 22 5/6, as those on the south beam of 12422 will soon be discontinued. Sky boxes hsould alreday be looking at the new frequency, so require no further action.

So the card will only get you Pick TV,Pick TV+1, Viva, Motors TV, LFCTV, Sony TV, Sony TV+1, irish c4s on (12480).

Perhaps, given there are no "main" uk tv channels that requrie a FTV sky card, they may be discontinued, with those channels above either going free to air or onto the subscirption package.
