Has anybody got a dome which they have used in Europe how good are they south of Biarritz ? What can I expect to pick up in Portugal ? It will be pre programmed for Astra 1 , 2 and Hotbird. Thanks
This is one question where the best answer is to suggest you do a search on the forum.
There are pages and pages of discussion on this topic, and you will certainly find the answer you want . . . a dozen times or more , and with some comments discriminating between different makes of dome and dish.
Hi we have an Oyster 85cm dish and we find we can get some programs even when in southern Portugal, others we have spoken to with domes have found that they lose the signal whilst still in France. That is not to say all domes are the same!!

Its all down to size I think the largest dome is 40/45cm ..you will need at least a 80/85 dish in Spain....having said that things are changing once again with the new Astra satellite so maybe best to hang on a while before you commit. See the other post re LNB and sky in Spain

I have the KVH R4SL dome which is 81cm and I can pick up most progs in France and down to Barcelona in Spain, after that it is very patchy.

If I wanted a dome, that's the one I would go for Keith.
It has a very good reputation and is not too big a pimple on top of the van!
We have an Alden Planar, which is another option for the OP to think about. If he doesn't like "pimples" a planar is probably the best option. When lowered it cannot be seen unless you are looking ovr the van from a high vantage point.
The LNB cannot be skewed on the Alden, but there are others which can be. That extends the southerly range by quite a bit.

I had a KVH 4 which is the larger of the KVH4 domes, The actual dish is 81cm wide but only 36.8cm High so it is in fact a small dish, I found the even across Europe and just into North Italy and Southern France I lost sat signals, I replaced it with an Oyster 85cm Skew and as yet I have not lost the signal anywhere, I have not been into Spain though.
I must admit that for where I tour I was very disappointed with the KVH seeing as how I sold an Oyster 85cm to buy it because it was more pleasing to the eye, So now I have sold the KVH and bought an Oyster which also has Internet.

I also have this model and it has a surprising range considering the relatively small dish.It worked well right down to the South of France this year when it started to lose some of the weaker channels.
