Can anyone advise where the trap is on the waste of an 6844 Esprit. I want to empty this for winterisation but I am unsure where it is located and none of the literature I have provides even a clue. Any advice gratefully accepted by this somewhat frustrated newbie - although I am generally impressed by Dethleffs products the support literature I have been provided with is rather lacking on detail particularly with respect to winter storage and where to access traps and tanks, etc. On a related point what are owners opinions on blowing waste and feed lines with a 12v tyre pump? Is this an acceptable practice? Regards Jak
Hi jak,
on our old esprit6844 [2005] model it was behind the rear wheel on kerbside..but surely you`ve emptied the waste water before?
As for winter drain down we did the following with no probs at all.
Open dump valve on truma boiler under bed-water will rush out underneath van.
remove the plug in the onboard water tank..
open all taps both ways for hot/cold and very importantly lift the shower cable to its full height to remove water.
Then also important [leaving taps open to allow air to circulate] turn the water pump off at control panel switch or in kitchen cuboard where it is situated- this prevents the pump burning out.
leave dump valve open and also plug removed from water tank.
to refill close/replace plug and close taps and turn pump on and refill water tank..then pull hot water through boiler then cold through taps.
leave waste tap open..under the van rear is the insulated tank with a inspection [red] cover this twists off to enable back flushing of food waste.
I think (which means that I am in dangerous territory) that Jak is asking about the trap in the waste outlet - ie the motorhome equivalent of the u bend under your kitchen sink at home.
I'm not familiar with the Esprit - but I can tell you where ours are. We have two, and both are in the pipes which feed into the waste water tank - quite close to the tank itself. You could try looking around the waste water tank area.

John

if he ment the drain traps..then better explanation needed
but yes they are inline under the van and twist off clockwise I think revealing a small holder, just undo and clean out with very small brush.
there should be one for each drain run..
kitchen, bathroom sink and shower which is the worst for bodily hair, use a small plastic "hair catcher in each of the shower drain hepls stop this,
our dethleffs had the winter pack fitted so all the pipes were insulated and the traps too with small heaters fitted to prevent from frezzing.
Thanks John, yes it is the waste trap I am enquiring about - sorry Tramp if I my query proved confusing or unclear.
I have drained down all of my system and found the traps to each of the sinks but still failed to find that associated with the shower. I have tried to trace the shower waste back to the waste tank from the underside but all pipe work is enclosed within floors. I can only assume the trap is directly underneath the shower tray but I have no idea how to access this area. There is a short facia to the front of the shower tray which is fixed under the lip of the tray but I am unsure how to remove this as the fixing is not obvious and I dont want to risk damaging the tray. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Failing this I wondered if it would be sensible to make a strong brine solution and pour this down the shower waste. Regards Jak
Firstly, are you certain that your van has one trap per drain? Have you checked (by pouring some water down each drain in turn) which of the traps is connected to which drains? I ask this because our Dethleffs only has two traps - one fed from the kitchen sink and the other fed from both the hand basin and the shower.
Secondly, I would be very surprised if any of the traps were hard to get at - they need to be accessible for easy cleaning. (Actually, I probably wouldn't be surprised - motorhome manufacturers often seem to have had a common sense bypass based on some of the "design" features that are out there:))
Thirdly, I agree that putting salt into the drainage system would probably provide sufficient protection. I've seen others on this site recommend this approach.
I must admit, in the two winters we have had our motorhome I have never worried about trying to drain the traps. I do drain the tanks, and I do leave all of the taps in the "open" position. However ours rarely stands for more than a month without being used - and the traps are contained within a well insulated double floor.
Regards,
John
