Ok I have read nearly all the threads and I need to get another life! I have decided to fit a solar panel onto my Swift Sundance to defeat the discharging battery problems on the Fiat Ducato base!

My head is boggled with all the ideas - brilliant as they are! Thankyou to everyone. All I need to know is......................

What size of panel do I need to keep the engine battery and leisure battery fully charged when at home or on unpowered site? Can anyone recommend a company to install it near Northampton. How much would it cost?

Andy

Measure the possible available spaces on your roof and then compare with common sizes available to see what it is possible to accommodate. During the current months you'll get a very modest charge so fit as much as you can. 2x80 with LCD regulator is £700 in my area. Good luck

not sure whats the best,

but a 60w and a 225w only manage 8 amp hours in these poor light conditions over the day and the max output i saw was 35 watts...

Fill your roof Laughing Laughing

can a modest charge be defined in watts Question

Modest from my 200 watts varies between zero and about 3.5 amps(Winter) Well over 10 amps (Summer). I have not collected my van from storage ever without full batteries tho.
Any day that shows no blue sky is a write off no matter how many watts but storage is usually a week to 2 weeks at most for us and that is enough to get enough reasonable sky. Like you say fill your roof! many vans are very tight for space Crying or Very sad

can you clarify the non blue sky day as being zero watts using 12v panels whatever the watts Question Question

reason i ask is because that would confirm the no output i get on the 12v 60w pannel ...

I was concerned because i do get reasonable output from the 29v panel in those conditions...

Mono panels will glean something without direct sunlight as long as there is blue sky but I find that no blue means no can do Laughing

We put a single 80W on ours and a battery master to keep our batteries charged when the van was in storage. This is fine for storage but when using the van we needed more.

So we now have two 80W panels, this is better but in poor weather it still only gives a modest charge. If you are going to be away from mains in the winter months you will need as much as will fit,but if you use you van of mains mainly in the summer an single 80 might do depending on how much 12v you use and how much AH battery power you have

Richard...

my 29v is poly and now knowing it performs where 12v doesnt i d have gone for a higher voltage one ,but the price was right...

I d also have bought this mppt rather than the ivt 30a as it is more efficient and contains newer technology including a super capacitor ...

This seems to be the way to go if you want more power in the dark months and you ve got the space for it...

I got this yesterday

http://www.maplin.co.uk/automotive-current-tester-217879

plugged it into the fuse holder which is between the battery and the regulator and the reading was 0.16 Amp
It was a dull day with no sunshine at all.
My Solar panel is a 90 watt from the tooldirect guy in Germany.
It was tested prior to fitting in sunshine and returned over 5 Amp
