We are ( still thinking of) heading for Turkey, probably via Italy and Greece, maybe returning via Bulgaria, Slovenia etc.
Has anyone used this outfit?
My daughter says it gives us an O2 UK no so she can ring us for free and we can ring her for 4p / minute - haven't really looked at it yet . . .
Sounds good if so.
We are also hoping to get a "tablet" and buy PAYG 3G Sims in Italy, Greece etc, - however, another daughter went through the process of buying a Sim for her Ipad for use in France, and found a the end of the process that she needed a French bank account to complete the purchase - fortunately we have those, but other people might not be so lucky!
Nothing to do with your post Helen, but I have had my phone unlocked in order to buy a French PAYG sim so I can use the internet in France on said phone at a reasonable cost. We spend 4 months a year over there.
Can you suggest which phone company would be best?
Location: Brimington, Chesterfield, Derbyshire and Acharavi, Greece

I know without a shadow of doubt that you can get sims in Greece but you will need to produce your passport even for PAYG, I also have one for Italy but a friend supplied me with it and I dont know what you need to do there.

0044.co.uk is good for receiving calls from the UK as it is free to receive and for the person who makes the call it costs the same as calling an O2 mobile back in the UK.
However it's no good for making calls when abroad as unfortunately it isn't 4p a minute to make calls unless you are also in the UK - it is in fact 30p a minute to make a call from most of Europe.
Vodafone offers a service called Passport across Europe which gives you a 60 minute call for 75p connection charge both to make or receive so if you like a longer chat when you do make a call it works out good value.
As far as data is concerned, if you have a smart phone you can use Vodafone for 25mb/day in any country in Europe for £10/mth.
This is enough for e-mail, web, weather, travel info etc - we've used it daily for 9 months (and using it now).
You need a contract but Quidco has some attractive cashback options eg:
£15.50/mth contract
£110 cashback from Quidco
Total: £6.33/mth
300 free minutes and 250mb in the UK
+ £10/mth for those months you are abroad.
You could use that sim in an Android 3G tablet (but not an iPad) but would be best in an oversized tablet / phone like the Dell Streak or Samsung Galaxy Tab.
We've used it for 10 weeks in Greece, Italy but unsure about Turkey. Wifi is eveywhere in Greece if you buy a decent antenna such as the Faculty X one- we only had 3-4 days without it.
As far as buying a new sim in every country is concerned - I just couldn't be bothered. I can do everything I need from my phone / tablet (and I run my business online) and Wifi hotspots are available if you need to use your laptop. Just install a free app to make sure you don't go over your limit and install Opera Mini to compress web pages.
Was just reading it for the first time in fact. We have been travelling ( in the UK) and are now back home ( in France).
Will have a bit more of a look ! Thanks for pointing out the 30p / min charge instead of 4p, quite a difference.
What usually happens is that my daughter ( who has a 1-year-old) chats to me for an hour twice a day!
Calls are free to all landlines in our phone contract, but we are trying to recreate - perhaps not this scenario - but at least have some means of chatting cheaply.
This would be a first, we usually lean heavily on texts when abroad, and Internet points, but Italy in particular seems particularly devoid of the latter.
She has an Orange contract, but probably has so many free minutes to UK mobile providers, I imagine.
We are also researching buying some sort of a tablet, as I said - our old laptop has died anyway.
I am a bit brain-dead today, may get further with this tomorrow!
Many companies are willing to pay a commission to websites who encourage people to buy their products and services. So for example if you visit Compare The Market.com and buy car insurance they could be paid upto £100 for referring you to them (that's how they can afford those god awful adverts!).
Quidco (www.quidco.co.uk) works by the same principal only instead of keeping that cashback they pass it on to the user. You sign up to Quidco, find the retailer you want to buy from and click "Visit Retailer' from their page within Quidco and buy the item as usual. Mobile networks are insurance pay the highest 'commissions' and thus cashback to you.
I get over £300/year in cashback buying things I in some cases I would have bought anyway so it's a great tool.
