I bought a new lap top, very nice too. I've lost the software for the faculty x box, so simply plugged it into the USB.
Message says your device is ready to use ! Ok, I don't have the colourful little icon and the flashy screen with connections etc, but my question is, is it working? Does it need external software?

Addie will know for sure! Laughing

If you have the current model (Ralink RT257X) then you can download the drivers from here. If you have the 2010 model with the Realtek RTL8187L chipset then download the drivers from here.

The software has useful functionality for the knowledgeable to maximise range. That said, without it, I would have thought your Operating System would give you a choice on boot of which wifi radio to use.

What he said! Laughing

Also download inSSIDer and use that when rotating the antenna through 360' to see what you pick up. Then click the tick boxes next to the networks you want to try and connect to and switch to the 'Graph' pane and rotate until the signal is constant and strong - close the program and connect either with windows or the antennas own software.

Ok, thanks folks, got and installed the drivers, looked at the pretty graphs, gonna get inSSIDer now.

Interestingly Windows 7 has no problem flipping between the inboard and outboard connectors automatically. I remember Vista was problematic in this respect (mind you the machine had practically no memory left on it).

Thanks again

Peter
