I'm planning to be in Europe most of the summer, France, Spain & Italy mostly and am planning on installing a satellite internet system as my work is done online.
Firstly which satellite systems are the most reliable and secondly are mobile dongles a better option now in the countries mentioned?
I use a mobile dongle in the UK and it's very cost effective, if I could do this abroad it would save me thousands.
You can use either. It will depend where you are going, how much data you use and whether or not you need guaranteed speed. You won't get a 3g signal on a dongle in most in isolated places and often only in big towns or cities.
If you want a satellite system do you want one you can use on a tripod or one on the roof of the van.
Earlier this year I went from an unlocked dongle with local sim cards in various countries to a satellite system. I much prefer the satellite system but it is comparatively expensive to buy and to run, Alan.
Italy you can get a TIM dongle - 3GB/mth for $60 for 3mths (apparently, haven't checked myself).
France and Spain there are also dongle options and then there is of course free wifi obtained with a long distance antenna.
Add to that Vodafone Data Traveller with a smart phone (25mb/day for £10/mth) gives you 24/7 e-mail access and web, 1hour calls for 75p connection charge.
I've been in Europe 9mths with just a Wifi antenna and Vodafone Data Traveller and none of my clients have suffered (I also work 'online').
I have both, the satnet is much the better way, always have issues with usb dongles most of the time they are 2g sometimes 3g or out of service..... so for your coverage area I would use ipcopter mention my name when you speak to Berhard.... I just needed coverage when i need it and where I am without messing about... mind you I do use my truck for my work, sometimes I need it to provide tv feeds, from any satellite within range and sometimes I provide on site internet.... the celphone is not an option sadly...
Ok Rus..... I think I might have to put a caro up on the roof as well, as the F1 is on sky, so i'll need astra1 for the video, astra2 for the english sound and helsat for the internet
If I recall they use 1.5mtr dish, when I've been working on some events while Im rigging saw some one installing a dish on a floor stand and they took all day as well, I don't think it would cover the areas you wanted, hence that's why I chose ipcopter, and a automatic dish on the roof.... Just check the footprint of too way first.... Cheapest is not always best...I recall I had lost my Internet link at a vital time on a Sunday, phoned ipcopter and they were very willing to help and changed a card their end and fault fixed...
