Just joined this website so this is my first post.

Me and the wife are looking for our first motor home and would appreciate some pointers on what the pro's/cons are regarding buying privately or from a dealer.

Our budget is 30-35k and would prefer one with a garage suitable for storing mountain bikes out of site from everyone, and capable of living in for long periods (touring Europe)

Would appreciate any feedback

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

I wasted a few grand on my first MH before realising that despite there being just me and the wife (and a staffie) most of the time we still needed as much room as possible. Room to stretch out, room to cook, room to sleep etc. The extra 3 or 4 feet on the length of a vehicle that you only use periodically is virtually unoticeable in terms of driving and parking whereas the utility and comfort the extra space gives you is immeasurable.

(Learn from my mistakes!)

All the best

Paul

Hi and welcome
The vans with garages are good but be aware that the bed will be shoulder height in the van so make sure your happy and ok with getting in and out of bed at this height. you do get a ladder but it can still be awkward in some vans

Hi and welcome.

Assuming you've not been looking too long, my advice would be:

Take your time - don't rush into buying anything just because it "looks nice"

You really have to get into them - physically. Sit in the front seats, make up the beds, lie on the beds, stand in the shower, sit on the loo, stand at the sink while your other half goes into the bathroom or comes in through the hab door. Imagine yourselves living inside for a month.

When you've done that and have a good feel for what appeals and what doesn't - go and do the same in another van with a different layout - and then another.

You'll soon learn what is important for you and what isn't.

Then you can start looking for one to buy (and even so, you may well get your first choice wrong).

I agree with Tony, look at as many as you can. We find the it's not hard to rule out those you don't want to consider, often at a glance.

You will find that you can quickly narrow your search down to a few layouts and brands. That's when it becomes more difficult and you need to spend time checking that everything suits. It' important to make sure that you don't buy and then find some hidden niggle to ruin your enjoyment.

Dealer versus private, it's hard to say. With the best dealers you will get a dealer warranty (as opposed to an insurance based one) which will cover any problems. Be careful to choose a dealer with a good reputation, some seem to lose interest once they have your money. A dealer near where you live is best because there are always warranty issues and long round trips are costly and time consuming.

I don't know much about buying privately never having done it but it ought to be a fair bit less expensive saving you some money to repair any faults yourself, Alan.

Yesterday after a lot of searching we took delivery of a 2007 Burstner Solano T695.

It was exciting driving it home up the A1, A1M, M62 and M6 with all the snow falling. We didn't realise how bad the roads were until we got home and the paths round our house were sheet ice.

Thanks to Neal and other staff at SMC in Newark for all their patience answering all the (silly) questions that us, as first timers asked.

Now have we got enough money left to pay this subscription?
