I have beenn trying to get to grips with entering GPS coordinates into my sat nav to no avail. I have emailed tech support at Pioneer but it takes too long to get an answer and even then it only partly answers the question, so I am hoping there is an expert out there somewhere who can help me.
Both in France and in the UK I have entered appropriate coordinates to no avail, always getting the response
"Coordinate input is prohibited or outside of map zone", yet the coodinates I have are published by recognised journals, for instance:-
N51degree 01.188' W3 degree 05.952' is somewhere in Taunton and N50 degree 41.721' W3 degree 31.193 is somewhere in Exeter, yet I get the message mentioned.
Please advise what I am doing wrong and what I should enter for the above?
I dont know your sat nav but maybe this will help.
I used Bing maps to get co-ords for a place in guildford and here is the format: 51.2475090026855 -0.724489986896515
Exeter is 50.719898223877 -3.53164005279541 decimal and N 50 43.194 W 3 31.898 in the format you posted.
If it's anything like my Pioneer inbuilt sat nav, the inputting of decimal is not possible, this has been confirmed by Pioneer, after a rather heated 'discussion'

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.”
How many of the three different formats does your sat nav accept?
According to Pioneer:- There are two types of GPS coordinates; The US decimal and European degrees/minutes/seconds. With our units we use the Europeanv degrees/minutes/seconds method.
The main thing to remember when inputting the European type of GPS
coordinates is that there is a maximum of 360 degrees, 60 minutes and 60 seconds. So if you have a degree of say 20 for example you would need to enter a 0 first I.E. 020 etc and nothing higher than 60 in either of the minutes or seconds boxes.Yet my Pioneer sat nav only allows me to enter 2 digits in the N degree field not 3!
The Vicarious books "All the Aires France" must be European Coordinates and so is the Pioneer system so why doesn't it work is the question I am awaiting an answer from Pioneer.
There are 3 formats but if I were you, I'd go for the decimal format - I find it much simpler.
N50.41.721 converts to 50.69535
W3.31.193 converts to -3.51988
That will take you to just south of Exeter
Tony,
What format is N50.41.721 if it was Euro format D,M,S then according to Pioneer I would enter N050.41.?? & W003.31.19, I cannot enter decimal, only European.
"All the Aires" book quotes format:-
N35degree 31.926', to me thats not decimal or D,M,S!
Think I need to find a teenager, they know everything!
I think I am getting there, I found a teenager.
3 types of GPS
Decimal
Degrees, Minutes, Seconds and
GPS
"All the Aires" book is GPS, the other set of coordinates I had was decimal, so I think all I need is a converter to DMS for the iPhone and I can sort it.
Is that right?
