Hi looking to buy a new sat nav to use in europe i've had both garmin and tomtom previously, does anyone have any experience of the tomtom go live 1005 what i'd like to know is can you add custom poi's such as all the aire's etc as i've read on the tomtom forums that this is impossible also as the new tomtom does not have an sd slot how much memory do they have for poi's etc and does anybody have any views on the garmin 1695 i know it has an sd slot but most of the poi's available are for tomtom how difficult is it to convert them.

Many thanks Gary

You can use on-line POI converters very easy

I've only used one, a TomTom 910. Does what it should and updated with all the free aires as POI. For us it does the job at a very reasonable price.

Garmin for me too best sat nav I have ever owned (465T). It has been faultless. You can see my articles and tutorials here. The lifetime map updates for £50 are a bargain.
Forgot to mention last week it saved my bacon by rerouteing off the M4 which was closed due to a RTA. I was taking my son to Heathrow and we were late for his flight to NZ. Thankfully if I had stayed on the M4 I feel he would have missed his flight.

Regards,

Graham

I have the Garmin Zumo660 combined car and motorcycle unit, expensive but it served my multi purposes very well indeed.

I do prefer the Garmins after having several TomToms before in the car.
All my friends with the motorcycle TomToms have had reliability issues with them which put me off them albeit they were cheaper.
We have also had some reliabilty issues with them in our company cars.

Up to now I can't say this with the Zumo ( touch wood ).
What swayed me was the Garmins previous background with Marine and hand held devices GPS thru' to very good chart plotters which I also owned of theirs.

What Garmin never seem to advertise and which I found out by chance
is the fact that my Zumo will actually take both Marine charts and operate with them ( I used it as a good backup on my fishing boat as well after copying over the charts ).

The other thing the Zumo will take is an SD card with the Garmin Topo maps loaded so it can if needed be used for a hand held device for walking etc..

Like the Tom Toms the Garmin isn't perfect i.e. it dosn't always take the quickest route etc.

What really cheeses me off is the fact that both TomTom and Garmin both use different Bluetooth Protocols on their Motorcycle units than on their standard automobile units which means having to use more expensive headsets dedicated for this use.

Garmin for me as well.
My old American Street Pilot lll of 2001 was still working perfectly with just one upgrade this year when I gave it to a friend.
Now in Europe the Garmin 255wt bought 3 years ago might not have the latest bit of motorway on it now but finds every tiny insignificant hamlet and village in France I want.

Ray.

I have the go 1005 live. Brilliant and you can add poi's, change map colours, change vehicle icons etc. It has a 4gig drive. I have acsi and aires on mine and plenty of space left for more.

I have found Garmin support great too, they always reply to emails within a day or two.
