Has anyone used a turkey roasting bag and can advise me on pros and cons ? Does the outside of the bird brown properly and go nicely crisp ?

We use the smaller type for chicken it cooks nice but does not go crisp as the juice stays in the bag and the meat is moist but not crisp.

I suppose you need a crispy looking bird for presentation, but you throw the skin away anyway so it don't matter as long as it's not dry

I have learned the secret of cooking a good and moist turkey or chicken, use a meat thermometer and take the bird out of the oven exactly when it hits the right temperature. Then let it rest for a few minutes. Seems that they get dry from over cooking, when we don't know the exact temp.

Many thanks everyone. I'll have a look for them when I do the shopping.

We like the outside of the bird crisp and, however unhealthy it might be, we do eat the skin. We always use a meat thermometer - my OH cooks the bird and it is done according to the best scientific principles ( and always turns out very well).

The turkey bag claims to make washing up simple and reduce cooking time by up to an hour. The thought of not having to get up too early as well as easier clearing up does make them seem attractive....! I'm not too keen on a soggy skin so might have to cut it out of the bag early.

Thanks again.

i d been looing out for roastie bags remembering my mother used them years ago...

had a chicken 3 weeks ago and it was brown and tender but think we over did it in the bag as the meat fell off the bone and the only problem i found was the roast potatoes...
All the juice was in the bag and i like them cooked in what comes out the meat not just the oil we dip them in before cooking Sad

Alternatively you could put the bird on a very low setting overnight. Then when you get up adjust the temperature for when you plan to eat.

Nothing better than waking up on Midwinterfest morning with the smell of roast turkey filling the house.
