Hi
I've just come from the 'dark side' and sold my caravan to treat myself to an ex-hire 2006 Geist coachbuilt on a Ducato 2.8JTD chassis. It's got 80k miles with a good history, and I just had it serviced with a new cambelt and tensioners. All seems fine mechanically although the clutch pedal is a little high and the service guy suggested a new clutch would be needed 'soon'. Luckily the price I paid for the vehicle was good enough so this doesn't hurt too much!! Just wondered what the weak points are with these vehicles and whether there are things to look out for. Thanks in advancxe for your guidance and insight.

They are good reliable engines, although I had to have a new clutch at 20k(£500 at an independent garage),the only other problem has been a faulty injector lead(no.4).

You have done the right thing changing the cam belt and tensioners,I assume the tyres, brakes and exhaust have been changed with that mileage so they should be ok,worth checking though.

With a full service history I wouldn't worry too much about 80k on the clock, the JTD will go around the clock several times if looked after properly. Smile

Welcome to the forum btw,if you subscribe you will have access to the search facility and lots of information about the Ducato and all manner of motorhome related topics.

Probably the best known failing is the loss of fifth gear, but it's not too hard to remedy. Also intermittent failure of the fuel guage is not unknown. Otherwise, if well maintained a good motor.

The fifth gear problem was on earlier models wasn't it?

Hi and welcome on board, you will find a fantastic source of information on here, although it is a little quiet at the moment. Your van sounds a fantastic buy, has it got the bike rack fitted yet or is that to come later?

Yes, I think you are right. As far as I understand the fifth gear problem was on earlier models. If reverse gear is left and up on the gear stick then I understand that is the later model and is OK. The earlier ones had the 5th gear bit external to the gearbox and was splash fed with oil from the main gearbox which was I believe the problem, not too well lubricated until warm.
I,m probably all wrong though so don,t mind being corrected.

A great motor, mine has given me over 72,000 Kms trouble free. The 5th. gear problem applies to earlier models. Yours being a 2006 will have a different 5th. gear layout.
BTW, if its a left hooker you might have the 'Power' engine, 146PS and buckets of torque from 1500 RPM.

Apologies - looks as if I started a red herring thread mentioning the 5th gear!
