Hi y'all, just posted a few general questions on parts of the forum then realised i should tell you a bit more about me.
Mid forties, married to the lovely Barbara, one seven year old boy and a seven stone bullmastiff called Murphy.
We've had vw campers for twenty odd years but lately we've decided we needed more space. We do a lot of moving about so adding an awning was a temporary but unsatisfactory solution, too much grief putting up, disconnecting to go sightseeing, taking down again to move on. We then bought a small pop up tent to keep picnic tables deckchairs etc in when parked up but we were still very cramped for space when travellng between stops. It was also a pain us all having to go to bed at the same time because of the sleeping layout in the wee vans.
So we took the plunge and bought an A-class Elnagh Magnum. We got it very cheap compared with others we've seen for sale and it's in very good nick. We didn't want to spend a lot in case we found it too different to what we were used to. I'll miss the whole vw camper community thing and i'm sure i'll get another some day, kind of "my other campers a vw" thing. I'd keep the one we have but it's worth too much to leave sitting about and i need to sell it to pay for the Elnagh anyway.
I thought the vw was underpowered but the Talbot 2.5d has been rather a shock to my system. I think if we like the A-class we'll probably trade up in a year or two to a (relatively) newer td of some sort. I like the look of the Pilotes and was gutted to miss an absolute bargain on ebay in October- it was on the mainland and i'm in Norhtern Ireland and despite my offering to give the guy a deposit by paypal, he wasn't happy (understandably) to take a chance on waiting for me to get over there and then changing my mind when he had a lot of buyers coming to view it. I don't blame him but it was still very disappointing as it was a good price and had everything we wanted.
So that's me in a nutshell, i know a lot about vw bays and t25's and will happily pass on any info i can. I hope i've done the right thing going bigger as i'm still a bit skeptical whether it'll be too big of a change. I'll have a vw t25 syncro (4x4) camper for sale on the classified's section soon too. Hope that wasn't too boring a post, Moderator - feel free to delete if it's far too long. Happy camping.
Welcome to mhf, impressive first post at an insomniac hour .
We campervaned in the 1970's with a very young family and seemed to manage well, sometimes with a tent for storage on longer stops! We've had the coachbuilt for about 5 years and wouldn't be without it, but I know what you mean about the vwcv community thing.
