Has anyone ever put a small double mattress in the overhead cab? I've measured it and it seems to fit. I've only slept on the current foam mattress a couple of nights at a time without any stiffness etc (STEADY!) but I'm planning on going touring for much longer and just wondered whether the weight etc of the mattress is fine above the cab?
Does anyone see a problem with this?
Also, my tax is due to expire whilst I am abroad.......as long as I tax it before I return to England, am I ok to drive anywhere in Europe without a valid UK tax disc?
Another fan of memory foam topper, transforms MH beds. Have a looky see on ebay, there are some bargains to be had, like a double topper for less than £30 !!
As far a tax discs are concerned I concur with the previous post. Dont forget to leave it till the LAST day of the month to surrender your "old" disc. Make sure its postmarked on the last day, doing on the first of the next month means you will lose all of the (later) months tax money !! It takes about 4 - 6 weeks for you money to come back from DVLA.
I had this issue before we went away last September and our tax ran out at the end of Nov. I'm not sure if this is legally correct but a Cheshire traffic policeman told me it was. The actual "offence" is not displaying a valid tax disc". This isn't actually illegal outside the UK. NOT taxing your vehicle IS though. So as long as you have actually paid the duty, which you can do online from anywhere, your vehicle will show on the DVLA database as being "legal" on any of the ANPL cameras on Mainland European roads, police data bases and just as importantly insurance wise.
Keep your ferry/train receipt and your payment receipt as proof you've paid it and providing you are travelling back home from your return ferry port you should be fine. If you do get stopped, don't accept the roadside fine/penalty but choose to go to court and because you have actually paid the duty, the police will not bother to take you to court for such a small offence because it wouldn't be in the "public interest" to take on the case. This won't work though if you're still driving round 3 months later!
Although away we did tax it online but the disc was here at home and we were in France & Spain. I drove the entire journey back with a Nov disc and not a dicky bird, even when I got back to the UK
I tried a topper, but didn't really work for me; probably got one that was too thin. I ended up buying a double-size memory foam mattress and cutting it to the required shape to fit the Hymer over cab bed. Very comfortable and doesn't weigh much more than the original Hymer mattress.
Re tax when abroad, i suggest you read your INSURANCE documents very carefully mine, both van and car, state vehicle must be road taxed (correct excise duty) or insurance is invalid.
