Look online at the Thatcham site - I am sure it gives an up-to-date list of approved devices, and maybe also approved installers.

When my dealer did mine, they didn't give me an installation certificate, instead provided a link to download it from Thatcham's own website. Bullet proof as they can't fake that.
NB though, if your fitter does that, download it quick as it disappears after (14?) days...I had to go back to Thatcham to get them to go through their records to provide a replacement.

Edit : note my insurers did say they'd want to see the certificate in the event of a claim...so knowing that both the equipment & fitter are certified may not be enough.
I'm just looking at my insurance renewal. The first two companies/brokers I have spoken to will only give an alarm discount if I have a certificate from the original installer stating that the equipment is Thatcham Category 1 compliant.
As the alarm was installed by Autocruise (pre-Swift) when they did the conversion in 2002, it is a condition I can never comply with - so, no discount.

You could have a different alarm fitted, some will actually work with the already fitted alarm.

Although its only supposed to be produced in the event of a claim I sent a photocopy of my Certificate of Installation to my insurers (Comfort) and they are happy to retain it on file.
One slight complication was the registration no has changed since the alarm was fitted so I attached a copy of the DVLA registration change form to the certificate, they are happy with that.
One less thing to worry about if the worst happens.

I've had a chat to Thatcham who have suggested getting the alarm recertified by an approved installer. Before I start down that road, I think I'll get my insurers to quantify how much the Thatcham Cat 1 designation is actually worth in terms of a premium reduction - both companies/brokers I've spoken to would provide cover based on a "manufacturer installed" alarm but without giving any discount.
There is lots that can be done to be fair to Thatcham
I am just leaving for the weekend so am stuck now but if anyone has any issues I am happy to advise
I sat on the manufacturers consultation group at Thatcham regarding the Thatcham Accredited Installers scheme, which came about due to the demise of the VSIB (Vehicle Security Installation Board)
In addition to that committee we have had separate meetings at Van Bitz regarding the forthcoming Thatcham Motorhome Security Section due out soon.

I've just spoken to Saga (my current insurer). They don't give any discount for having an alarm fitted!!! If told about an alarm, it is listed under vehicle particulars / modifications and only used in assessing value in the event of an insurance write-off.
