There used to be a facility (probably still is) whereby when I went into Google Maps, & because I hold a Hotmail account specifically for the purpose, an icon a bit like a ladder would appear in the bottom left-hand corner of the map. By placing that icon on a start point you could very accurately measure a route (in my case for running training). I've gone into Google Maps this morning but the icon, and therefore the facility, seem to have disappeared. Does anybody know, please, why this might be? Have Google removed the route measuring facility? Is the problem likely to be at my end?
Thanks for any advice.

Reason for change by jimmyd0g: Getting my right hand & left hand mixed up!!
Look to the left of the map and scroll down to the bottom
click on "Maps Labs" ( it is a very small text link )
a pop up window should show on which you need to click on "enable" the measurement tool. Make sure you then click save changes.
Then when you are on a location where you need to measure the distance you will notice a very small ruler icon at the bottom left of the map ...click on that and mark the map.
here are the instructions from Google, they get to the "maps labs" a different way...it seems normal with computing for there always to be several ways to do stuff ... :-
Distance Measurement Tool You can use the Distance Measurement Tool to easily calculate the distance from one location to another in Google Maps.
To do this, follow these steps:
1.Visit maps.google.com.
2.Click the gear icon in the top corner of the page and select Maps Labs from the drop-down menu.
3.Enable the Distance Measurement Tool.
4.Click Save changes.
5.Click the ruler icon at the lower left-hand corner of the map.
6.Click your starting point on the map, then click your destination point to trace the path. A red path will appear on the map between the two locations, and the distance will be shown in the left panel.
Tips and tricks
•You can choose between two different units: Metric (in km) or English (in mi).
•Calculate the distance between multiple locations by clicking on more than one location on the map.
•If you sign in using your Google account, Google Maps will remember your Maps Labs preferences. http://support.google.com/maps/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1628031

Thanks for your reply Mike. I did read it earlier, but I've only just finished my share of the housework (honestly) so it's only now that I've been able to take the suggested action - which, of course, worked .
Cheers.
