I am aware of the Wifi aerial boosters for netbook/laptop use with usb connector.

Is it possible to get a Wifi aerial booster for a mobile smartphone which has Wifi capability, and where would it connect (mini-USB)?

I am just about to get my first smartphone (a Samsung Galaxy S Plus) and wondered if it is possible to enhance the Wifi signal to the smartphone in some way.

As far as I'm aware there are no Wifi boosters that plug into your mobile, you need to use an external device to boost or repeat the signal somehow.

Your best way is to use your laptop to create an 'ad-hoc' computer to computer network using windows connection sharing. This is particually easy with Windows 7.

Once connected you create your own network name and password and log as many devices into your laptop, using it as a virtual router or hub.

If you're going abroad, Vodafone data traveller gives you 25MB/day for £10/mth which is loads to get you online - especially if you download Opera Mini to compress websites upto 90%.

I really need to stop banging the Vodafone drum, but it really is the best solution to this problem at the moment.

Thanks Addie. I have picked up elsewhere your advice re Vodafone Data Traveller and intended to go down that route for 3G connection.

I have no experience of using a smartphone on WiFi, but just wondered if there was any way of enhancing the WiFi signal.

What about the metal colander device? Could you locate the smartphone in a parabolic signal enhancer? Am I "grasping at straws"?

I'm afraid you are in that respect. There used to be a little PCB circuit board you could slip in behind your battery to boost your signal - it was a total scam!

The Wifi device in a mobile phone is so small and weak that even if you could somehow fix a 10db antenna to your phone the difference would be negligible, it is not all about size of your antenna it is how powerful your chip is and in a mobile phone it is very small and weak by comparison.

If a Wifi connection is available I always turn on the Laptop and use that, much better then using the phone.
