Whilst at the recent Shepton Mallet show I noticed a dealer with 2 Smart cars for sale complete with A frames. I have a Smart on an A frame and profess to know a little bit about the legality or illegality (depending which side of the fence you sit on) of A frames.
Whilst looking with a friend who is in the market for such a car the salesman came over and started his sales pitch.
Yes sir, 1 car has a braked A frame and 1 does not. I questioned the legality of the unbraked version, only to be told by the salesman/expert that brakes are not required on the car because when coupled to a motorhome on an A frame it becomes a trailer!
I stated that under trailer law, if a trailer is fitted with brakes then they must work. Oh no, he said the vehicle weighs under the 750kg weight that requires brakes. Again I pointed out that the 750 kg is the MGCW and not the unladen weight, which the Smart exceeds.
I sincerely hope no one fell for this sales pitch and bought what is considered to be a totally illegal set up.
This came from a motorhome dealer, what else is he telling buyers about that is totally untrue and incorrect?
They are also for sale on their website.

I was there and saw them. We bought our first motorhome at the show a Bessacarr E560 and as such we're really green about such matters. To the layman it looked a really good way of carrying a car.... although I'm here to research carrying my motorbike (260Kg's).
I also noticed the two smart cars and had a good look; the one had dun 20,000 miles and the other around 6,000 if I remember correctly, they both looked in good nick but how many miles have they really travelled?
I agree with you regarding the braking issue so trying to sell that vehicle without giving the correct information is bad.
I already have a smart car, which we take with us, before we brought our car we asked lots of questions and read up on as much as we could fine about the towing and the laws all over Europe.
We finally decided because there where so many grey areas that we would opt for a trailer to be safe.
