I have a 2008 Fiat Ducato based Adria Twin with a gas locker and Calor bottle. I will be touring Europe this year and would appreciate any advice on fitting a fixed under-slung tank and removing the Calor bottle. What size would be best? where is the best place to mount the tank and filler point? Photo's of a fitted tank would be good if anybody has any. I intend to fit it myself and have it checked before use.
I got everthing including very good advice from autogas 2000 near Thirsk north yorkshire they have a good web site but I cannot get it to hyper link sorry.
To be honest I don't know what's best for my needs. I had considered Gaslow or Alugas because the conversion would be easier and I would have the option of removing them if I sold the van. But the advantage of an external tank would mean more storage space. The cost for either system is around the same if it's a DIY job which is why the external tank appeals to me. I think I have settled for the external tank, but I would appreciate all opinions.
My Wildax came with an underslung 20litre tank. There should be plenty of room under your Twin as the Wildax also has a large underslung water tank, whereas your Twin's is onboard.
I would certainly consider fitting one as the Twin's gas locker does take up a lot of room, it is also more convenient to top up with gas than change bottles, and cheaper!
I suggest that you go for a slightly larger tank than the 20litre if you can.

Hi Nick,
I had my tank fitted by AutoGas 2000 in Thirsk. I went for the 60 litre tank which is just short of the equivilent of 2 13kg bottles. (Speak to Chris, very helpful). I went for this option as it freed up extra storage space.
When I go over to the van at the weekend I'll take some photos of the fitting if it's of any use to you.
Working out the size of tank you need should be fairly straightforward.
A kg of LPG works out around 2 litres, and a fitted tank can be filled up to 80%, so if you currently use (say) an 11kg bottle a week that equates to a 27.5 litre tank (11 x 2 x 1.25)
A 20 ltr tank would roughly equal an 8kg bottle.
Ideally you need record your current usage to give you an idea of the required tank size.
Filling your tank at the local garage means you pay much more VAT than bottled gas.
We have a 2007 Adria Twin and we have 2x 11kg Gaslow bottles giving us 44 litres of gas capacity.
Over the last 280 days touring europe 95% wild camping our average for gas usage is 1 litre per day using the fridge on gas and hot showers every day plus a bit of heating too so based on that we top up every month.
We weighed up the underslung tank but it was £200 more expensive and more costly to remove and refit ton our next vehicle. We mounted our filler inside the locker (never had problems when filing) and we have a Secure-in-Motion regulator meaning we don't have to be in and out the gas locker turning tanks on and off before travel.
Given the number of times we grounded our step in eastern europe I'd not want anything that further reduces our ground clearance.
If space is a concern check out our blog, we got 8 large storage boxes under our fixed bed (4 accessible from inside) plus a compartment for chairs, ramps, screens and we took with us all our hot and cold gear for a year away!
