Hi folks, just saying a quick hello as i have just joined up hopeing to get a bit of info on a few things intime for when i start my DIY demountable.
I am wanting to combine 2 of my interests which is 4x4 off roading and traveling, the second though has not been done much but hope to if i get this project done. Tracey the more sensible half has always wanted to mooch around Scotland, myself also realy so its about time i did something about it.

Now the base vehicle is an UMM Alter II, a bit of a rare bit of kit, but i like it as it is different, a 4x4, goos ize bed at 7 foot, i wont go into the detail of what i am going to do with the base of the UMM as thats more the off road forum chat but as said i hope to build a demountable for it.
So i will start with the Q`s in the correct section and once i ready i will start a build thread, i like to do this a sit helps me and others in our projects.

Here is the Green Godess Cool

It may seem ripe for a dis(de)mountable unit.

Hi and welcome to MHF.

I've always fancied a Demountable so will follow your posts with interest.

We also have a Demountable specific forum on MHF Wink ....

http://www.motorhomefacts.com/forum-201.html

In addition, I would also contact Martin who runs the >Stuff About Demountables< website if you need more specialist advice, loads of info on there.

Good luck with the project.

Pete

I used to live in Portugal, there were lots of UMMs around there.

Looks like an interesting project, keep us posted.

Thanks for the welcome Very Happy, good to have a nice welcome, some forums are a bit ignorant. I do like the different things in life, even if i had the money to buy a new vehicle i would still have a unusual vehicle, it makes me laugh when i get things home and friends and family laugh at what i have got and then over time of me working and fixing them up they begin to see a different side, i was shocked when SWMBO said she liked it. They are a rare thing in the UK and will not be all that easy for parts but if it comes to it i will swap axles etc for maybe a rangerover discovery, we will see.
I had a good start today with the UMM, i was told that it had a reconditoned engine at a cost of over £2k 6 years ago, well after being sat it didnt make much difference to me, but today as i have no paitence it got a new battery and had a go at gettin git running first, well no word of a lie after a gallon of diesel to the tank it fired up on the 2nd crank of the engine Shocked , blew smoke for a minute then sweet as a a bottle of bow Very Happy

Once again thnaks for the welcome Wink

Here is a link to my web page showing my demountable that I built in 2000 and which I still own.

I started from scratch building the chassis with Foers Engineering and then completed building the truck which took 4 months.

The demount unit took another 6 months to build and fit out.
The truck has a bespoke space frame chassis fully galvanised and all mechanical / electrical bits are Land Rover.

The Habitation unit has an aluminium space frame chassis covered in 8mm marine ply then finished in the usual .9 mm aluminium skin

Like you I like unusual vehicles.
When building demounts you need to be very careful on the weight of your habitation unit and fittings ,as you can easily exceed it's GVW.
Good Luck

Thanks for that kida, similar to what i have planned, and an IBEX, i like them, rare as these UMM`s, i am thinking on 25mm ally box frame and 25mm insulation but GRP outer as i am OK with that stuff and ply inner, very similar, the main thing for me is sorting the legs out for it.
Its payload is 1100kg and i think 800kgish rear axle so i can keep within that.
