I have a complex accounts XL file created in MS office 2003, PC world advised me that this version will not run under windows 7, so although I have it it's not installed, is this true, as it's that time of year again.

I've opened the file in office starter and permitted editing, all seems to be fine, (so far) but I'm sort of waiting for it to tell me that this is only a trial version and I need to upgrade to some expensive version, or can I just carry on using it.

I do have open office, but I'm worried it might not support some of the macros which have been set up for me.

Hi Kev

Yes office 2003 will run on windows 7, if it didn't there is always the XP compatibility mode system on windows 7, but it can anyway.

Office starter will time out, essentially it's a trial.

If you have office 2003 retail, then install it.

PC World are past masters at selling you things you don't need - be it a replacement computer for one that just needs a Windows re-install or replacement software just because the older version doesn't have the latest bells and whistles. Take everything they say with a very large pinch of salt and then check it out several times. And yes, Office 2003 should run as others have said.

Strange that, PC World told me it was a starter pack and would run without an end date. The only trouble with it is that it is slow to load and full of "Pop up" ads trying to get you to buy other MS software. I removed it and put my 2007 Office and Student on.

Hi I have Windows 7 with Office starter and been using it without any problems for about 6 months.
I don't think Office starter will time out I think that you will just have to put up the the adverts that run at the side.

Or, of course, they could have made a mistake. Simple enough in view of the fact that the official Microsoft training for Office 2010 does not mention that if the user already has an earlier version they can use that. Secondly, Windows 7 was not around at the time that Office 2003 was introduced and therefore the compatibility would not be shown on either the software or the retail package. Finally, Office 2007 was launched as "Optimised for Windows Vista" and in the same way Office 2010 is "Optimised for Windows 7". Someone new in the industry may not be aware of the backward compatibility. With over 5,000 different products in the store, it is highly likely that the sales staff may not know everything.
It is great that members on here are able to criticise retailers, but the vast majority of members are well into retirement and therefore have the time to study before commenting. The store staff are paid peanuts, but still expected to be experts in all fields.

I don't think that is fair, Gerry. What I think most of us expect is that store staff never ever offer advice which they don't know for certain is true. "Haven't a clue, mate" will do just fine.
