After numerous discussions and a lot of planning (we think), we have handed in our notices at work to seek a new life abroad.

The excitement begins with a 2 month tour of Thailand and Vietnam (not in the MH!), and then we return to pick up Basil (our MH) and head for the sun.........well Spain, so technically correct!

SO EXCITED!!!! Cool

We've given up our jobs, We have just sorted out the renting of the property, most of the furniture is sold, MOT is being done in 2 weeks, from what we can gather from other posts we have all the necessary accessories for Basil (I say that cos we have only been away in him 3 times!!!).

We're hoping not to come back to England, and hopefully find somewhere nice in Spain to settle, eventually rent a place (but no rush), and settle with a job that keeps us ticking over.
I've read so many forums giving all the reasons why it shouldn't be tried, but what's the worst that can happen.........we'll always look back and think 'what if'.

The language may be a little problem at the start, but we've been looking at intensive courses in Spain to help out, plus Carla has already completed a part time course here in the UK.

If anyone has any tips or can share experiences, they'll be greatly appreciated. We're pretty new to motorhoming, but really can't wait to head for Spain!

Once we start our trip we're hoping to give regular updates and feedback of Aires and Campsites with piccy's so watch this space.....

Can't wait to hear of other experiences / tips!

Thanks all.

Terry & Carla

Well done for making the decision.

We did it so anybody can, although not in Spain.

What do you specifically want to know?

Paul.

Hi Coppo,

I guess any little tips that you picked up on the way.......the longest we've been away for is 3 days, so month's are gonna be a real eye opener for us..........although an exciting one we think!

I've been reading posts on the Full-timing forum, but if there's anything in hindsight you would have done differently, maybe that's a good start for us.

Thanks

Terry

Three days! Don't you think you should have a longer trial away in your motorhome before you burn your boats?
How do you know you are going to be compatible after even only a couple of weeks?

Anything i would have done differently you ask.

Yes, not taken Caroline Razz Razz

Seriously there is loads that needed to be sorted and planned, it sounds like you have done everything. Getting rid of the house contents before renting was difficult, selling, car boots, advertising etc.

Whatever you do you will always be apprehensive and think is it a mistake or you could/should have done that etc.

Finances are a big thing and you need an income of some sort, Caroline works from the MH online.

We have recently changed the MH to a bigger one with a good lounge and great payload as the space does seem to get smaller the more you are in it, although some people do manage with smaller ones than we have just got rid of.

Paul.

We did not go as far as selling our house (yet), last year we set off from London to Cape Town, it has been by far one of the best things we have ever done together.

We are now planning (started) building our camper van for our next trip to cross Canada and the good old USA in 2014.

You will meet lots of good and interesting people, and very occasionaly you will come across a chancer but they are always easy to spot.

Good Luck Dave.

Cheers Coppo, yeah I guess trhe finances are always the biggest issue and probably why more people don't take the plunge! We have enough to see us through approximately 4 months, barring any real expensive repairs (but we just flew through the MOT today so that's nice!), after that, if we still haven't found a bit of work we have the rent from our property to fall back on. It's not masses but it should be enough......

locrep - Wow Cape Town eh.......amazing!! I think I'll settle for Spain at the moment

Spacerunner - We bought the MH specifically for this trip, with much thought about the other options (tent, trailer tent, caravan, hostels etc etc) So the experience was always going to happen, and the MH came out on tops (although the caravan was a very close second!).....I don't think the space will be a major problem based on the climate and the fact that we'll be outside most of the time.
As long as the mattress is comfortable (I'm looking into this at the moment), I think we'll be fine.....

Thanks all.

Terry

Brilliant thing to try!

We sold up in GB and moved to France last summer (we have a house here and have just completed a barn conversion to give us a gite to rent out and augment his pension). It was hard leaving our 5 kids and their families including 4 grandchildren and it has been very difficult not being close when our daughter had a baby in October but it is not too hard to get back across the channel! We went back for our sons wedding last September too which we wouldn't have missed for anything!

Best choice we ever made! We still have our MH and have used it a bit although it would be good to use it even more this year! I do hope your dream works out as well as ours seems to be. If not, you still have your GB passports so you can always go back to Britain. If you enjoy it, just stay!
