I'll be honest - we have never had one. We bought out 2001 VW Calypso Compass nearlytwo years ago with just 18000 miles on the clock and with little use. We took it to Portugal just 18 months ago and had no real bother.

We are abot to embark ona 6-8 month trip to France/Spain/Portugal/Italy etc so thought that a check over wouldbe a good idea. I popped intour local place and they want £165 for a 'habitation' service' !! Am I wrong or os that a lot on money ??

We just wnat someone to check over the fridge/cooker/water heater/electrics - I'm not interested in someone telling me that the seals around the windows are 'fine' and likewise the rooflight and similar 'doesnt leak' Wink

Have any of you any recommendations for something more reasonable??

When Warrington(Woolston) Caravans in Sankey packed up we were delighted when their ace fitter Anthony went independent and mobile. He recently did a quick repair on a water leak from the fresh water storage system for me on our drive - excellent service.

Anthony's mobile is: 07709 818382

Incidentally he does all base vehicle and habitation bodywork stuff too, including 'damp' repairs, and is a fully qualified mechanic so he can do base vehicle services and repairs too. He will be doing both vehicle and habitation services for me in a couple of months plus MOT and changing front disc pads (I hope thats all!)

He will give you a quote over the phone.

Hope this helps

A1 Mobile Caravan Services, Warrington (also called Anthony different mobile number to above 07811732367) Office 01925 451513 are NCC etc approved and use by a few people on here. He has a website
www.a1mobilecaravanservices.com which details some of the bodywork he has done, also electrics and the usual fitting stuff like panels and bike racks.
Did our habitation service yesterday

ps: morning Paul

Hi,
I may be wrong but it looks to me that you are looking for an engineer to service your appliance's prior to holiday?

The habitation "service" is mainly inspecting or checking that the electrical, water and gas appliance's work - see webpage:-

http://www.ukmotorhomes.net/images/Approved_Workshop_Motorhome_Service_Schedule_2010.pdf

You will note the comments at the bottom of the sheet

2. Appliances are checked for operation only, additional servicing may be required for warranty purposes.

The only items I consider that an owner does not do every time they use the van is the "gas leak test " and the "damp test"

For example in the hab "service" the fridge is not serviced ie taken from its housing, inspected, cleaned, new jets etc its checked for operation

Be sure of what you need before paying for a "service"

Regards Ray
