Apart from taking small minor back roads - I don't think there is a viable alternative

Don't be too concerned about taking minor roads in Spain. We found them really good. Mostly well built and very quiet.

As has been said there is no other viable route other than via BCN.

However it is easy to avoid AP7. We use the following route:

N340 from Denia
then S of BCN its C32 onto the B10 (Ronda de Litoral) which takes you round the sea/port side of BCN
pick up C32 heading NE out of BCN.
Then N11 to border Spain/France at La Jonquera. Changes to D900 in France and away you go. Number changes to D6009 as you head N. Pick up A9 whenever you have had enough.

Sal

Edit: We will likely be heading up that way after the meet so we could always form us a convoy and I'll ride shotgun!

I dont think the OP is worried on the AP7 as it being a motorway or even a toll road. More likely from one of the stories floating about regarding "bandits" and motorhomes being targets..

Like many others we have done that route for years and never encountered any issues.. At least by being a forum member you get to hear about potential security issues and can take some of the advise offered.. The fastest route around Barcelona is the motorway and I suspect you may feel more uncomfortable on some of the rural and built up outer city roads.

Amydan dont get scared by it all, be alert and aware of the situation.. Fuel up and have a break prior to the Barcelona area and then make the journey around in one go. If someone does try and flag you down in a plain car, just carry on. Have a camera in the cab and take a picture of them... IF and a big IF they did turn out to be real police and really wanted to stop you and you suddenly get 2 or more police cars with flashing lights behind you then it may be time to stop..

Another tip is to spot another van and just stay close to that.

Safe trip..

In that case the route Sal posted will be the better, done it dozens of times and apart from some heavy traffic it's not a problem.

Having said that the route I posted is a toll free, senic route with some nice free stopping places not all that boring motorway driving and off the bandit run too boot.

This is the best route

But why dont you want to go around Barca we do it 3 or 4 times a year no problems. We never stop for fuel though.
