Just a heads up really about the Park n Ride service run by Portsmouth City Council from Lakeside, North Harbour just off Junction 12 of M27.

http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/living/15424.html

It only operates on Saturdays & Bank Holidays, as they use one of the carparks normally frequented by office workers on the business park at Lakeside.

We went to Portsmouth today and encountered only about maximum of 40 cars using the carpark!
The single decker buses run every 3 - 4 minutes and it's about 5 minute journey into Portsmouth, ideal as they stop near the Cascade Centre & then onto Gunwharf Quay, where they stop next door, outside the Rail & Passenger Ferry terminal.

Cost is £ 2.50 parking per car per day (and motorhomes are included) and this includes the bus fare. Although you can't park overnight, it makes it very cheap & easy, to spend a day in Portsmouth. Talking to the bus driver on our return to Lakeside, he told us it has been running for about a year, but feels it is very under used. We would agree, as it also saves a lot of hassle trying to drive & park in Portsmouth.

It's a shame that the City Council don't make more fuss about it, as it really is a good way to get into Portsmouth, especially for anyone using their motorhome, but also for car drivers, when you see the Cascade Centre car park charges £6 per day!

We used it last month when we came down. It was very handy and far easier than parking in town or on the sea front. It is a shame you can't stay overnight, you never know one day they may change their minds.

We shall use it again if we come down to see the bits me missed last time.

Oh, and if you are in to geocaching there is one in the car park.

Hi

The reason its underused is that the council have ensured that there is nothing other than Gunwharf left in the city worth seeing, unless you like mobile phone shops.

We live there for 18 years until last May and always went to Southampton for shopping.

There is so much history around the area to see, its a shame

The city council turned down the Ikea store that was then built in Southampton. It was going to built in a scrap yard and the area cleaned up.

They have also spent a fortune cocking up the road layout and installing cycle paths that no one uses as they do not have right of way across junctions. The city traffic planner cant drive and wants everyone to use busses, hence the crap traffic lights, bus lanes, speed cameras and 20mph speed limits

Glad we moved away, fed up with the traffic!
