I purchased a Maplin Damp meter whe we were looking at buying our first motorhome and it helped us avoid a damp floor unit we nearly purchased.

The Maplin unit is ok http://www.maplin.co.uk/moisture-meter-220803
but it's not easy to read in the tight spaces you need to access in a motorhome. I may add a remote prong unit and fly leads to make it easier. It's also not as accurate as the ones the delaers use.

One thing to consider is that lack of service and habitation history can serious devalue a unit when you come to resell.

I can also do my own servicing and plan to do as much as I can and then have the dealer do the minimum.

I'd have at least one habitation service so you get a set of base values for damp and the laocations for testing you can then repeat straight after with your own meter and check you agree.

I also run a small de-humidifier in the van while it sit's on mains hookup outside and that rmoved aroun a litre of water a week.

A motorhome habitation check isn't that expensive and gives the vehicle a good checking over. That way you won't have to worry about where to stick the probes... I service motorhomes and I have two types of meter, the one with probes but motorhomes have areas that you wouldn't want to stick probes in and I have a radio frequency probe too. The cost of those two meters alone would pay for a few services!!!!

Its fully inclusive in my Habitation service which is £100 and a stand alone damp check is £60. I hope that helps put it in some kind of perspective. (Sorry this isn't advertising I was asked a direct question).
