Am just about to get rid of my Cheyenne and unfortunately will have to wait until April for my new Dakota to arrive. So between now and then I need to decide on what security I need on the van , I had a tracker and Sigma alarm in the Cheyenne.
I can't carry over my trackers lifetime subscription to the new van even if I move the tracker itself over so basically I will have to start over if I decide to fit a tracker - mugged again!. So having checked it out with my insurer (Comfort) the only thing they insist on is a Cat 1 alarm system for vans over £55K and under £75K.
So what does the panel think
A) Fit Cat 1 alarm only
or
B) Fit both
Personally at the moment I'm thinking of going with option 'A ' or am I being too frugal. Do most new van owners fit trackers I wonder .
It is the sensible option, if your paying out that amount of money, why would you not spend 1% of the purchase price to protect it ?
You have a point but if the bandit is clever enough to get around the alarm I would think a tracker is easy to fool with a jammer.
Of course the other question is - do you want it back after the damage that might have been done getting in!
I forgot to mention also - the benefit of having a tracker fitted to my Comfort premium is £10 per year !!!!!!!

The MH we recently bought had over 3 years tracker subscription remaining and the dealer said just ring them to transfer over. We weren't prepared to fork out when we subsequently were informed by phantom we could not carry the remainder over and the previous owner could not get a refund. I thought it a case of heads we win, tails you lose. We also would have had to pay £25 administration as well as the subscription.
We just have the alarm system, spoke to Mark at Phantom and he said they had 7 motorhomes stolen last year and many, many more caravans, well over a 100 so decided against the tracker.
I carried my Cobra lifetime to the new van last september, and it works ok as Cobra call while the van was being moved on a flatbed last week
And yes I have both alarm and tracker better safe than sorry

Paul.
Thanks for this .It would be interesting to know where those 7 were stolen from . My guess would be from a storage or garage forecourts.
The thing is, it's not just about preventing your precious toy from being stolen/burgled, it's about peace of mind. It may not make it any less likely to be pinched, but if I can rest easier knowning that I can track/disable my vehicle if necessary (after all, we all hope nobody will even try to steal it in which case why bother even with an alarm). Being a belt and braces kind of a guy, I'm going with both a good alarm and a non-subscription, completely transferrable (even ex-Europe) tracker.
